Hello on Wednesday

Dear Friends,

Another day went as planned. Kyla got on her morning flight to California.
Kevin and Max bonded well on Kevin's day off from his restaurant.
Linda's day of Mah Jongg, and Dinner and a Movie with some girlfriends went as planned. Linda said that I would have not loved the movie which at times had sub titles. I did watch the Red Sox go down to defeat at the hands of the Yankees. Good pitching stopped good hitting.

Max is going off to daycare at 9:15 AM, and I will pick him up from daycare at the usual time today.

Politics -- My friend who is a radio talk show host is starting to have political candidates on his daily talk show. Yesterday, he had a candidate of the Green Rainbow Party on his program. I like what the guy had to say, and I could be voting for this guy during the next election. Protecting the environment is one of the party's mantras. He mentioned the process called "Fracking" where the companies drill holes through shale to extract natural gas. A few weeks ago, they had an article about the process which the companies claim do no harm to the environment. Yeah Right! Well, the "60 Minutes" program had explored both sides of the issue, and the companies don't tell the whole messy story.
It reminds me of the companies that have done copper mining in some of the Western States. After the companies decide that no more copper can be extracted for a profit, they abandon the strip mining. The big hole / pit that these companies leave fills up with water, and eventually the arsenic laced water ends up flowing in nearby streams and property. The tainted water pollutes, and kills the natural habitant in those waters. I say keep on purchasing oil from the Arabs!
Speaking of oil, I went by two gasoline stations yesterday that had run out of regular gasoline. We can feel the crunch created by Hurricane Irene. I hope this lack of gasoline is not a concocted scheme created by the oil companies so that the consumer will be so desperate, and be willing to pay higher prices just to fill up our gas tanks.
Since I am on an environmental kick, I want to talk about windmills. I don't like messing up the view of our beautiful Berkshire Hills. Many of our friends don't think it is a big deal, but I call it visual pollution. Sure, as long as those windmills are miles from your home it is no big deal, but how about the people who want to escape the concrete, and build their home in the middle of the woods. Ask those people how wonderful windmills are?
Cape Cod residents are still in legal battles because they don't want their nearby ocean dotted with wind mills. Instead of having Whale Watching trips when people vacation on Cape Cod, they will have trips to observe Windmills.

If you don't get my daily blog for several days, it will because I will be taking care of a toddler. Linda thinks that I might get distracted, and not be attentive to Max. I know one thing, and that is I will sleep like a rock at the end of each day when I put Max to bed.

Well, you know what I will be doing for the next few days. Linda on the other hand will feel like she died and went to heaven! Can she handle the peace and quiet, and me not being around to bug her?

Have a great Wednesday! I will be watching the Red Sox this evening after I put Max to bed. Maybe Max and I will watch a couple innings together since the game is on when he is still up.

The Lap Top and the IPad might stay in Pittsfield so you might not hear from me until the weekend.

Talk to you soon. The Curley Lad

Hello on Tuesday

Dear Friends,

Our Monday went as planned, but I did forget that Linda was socially engaged around supper time. A golfing buddy of hers retired after many years as a secretary in the Pittsfield Public Schools. They had a little party for the woman at the restaurant at the golf course. The lady appreciated the thoughtfulness of the group.

It is official with respect to babysitting for our Tewksbury grandchild. Our daughter-in-law has a morning flight out of Logan to the West Coast for a two week (or more) work related project. I will be doing the child care activities alone this week. Could Linda be looking forward to have several days alone without me around to bug her? You Betcha!

I haven't mentioned my Achilles Strain in the last few days. The leg is the best that it has felt in months. I want to make sure that I don't strain it while chasing around a toddler for several days. Linda is a little nervous that I might not be attentive while taking care of Max. The other day, Kevin and Kyla left Max alone for two minutes, and he proceeded to open a whole bunch of bananas. When it is quiet, and you don't see and hear a toddler, often there is something the toddler shouldn't be doing.

Since I am leaning toward the disciple theme, I see where a lady's form of disciplining her child was to video tape her sticking hot sauce down her child's throat. She was hoping that the video would make it across the national airwaves, and that she would be invited to appear on Doctor Phil's program on national television. Well the police and child protective services saw the video. This mom is going to jail for one year, and then she will be on probation for three years after the jail sentence. This goes back to one of my favorite quotes that I saw at an exhibit in Washington, D.C many years ago: "Stupid people shouldn't breed!"

As I was watching the Weather Channel last evening, I guess that I didn't realize that three covered bridges were destroyed by flooding in Vermont.
One of the bridges had a $1 million dollar insurance policy on it!

Yesterday, there was a big discussion on all the morning talk shows as to whether or not the news media hyped up Hurricane Irene. I would say ask the over thirty people in various States who died because of storm related incidents.

As we begin this school year, there was a good CNN article about College Courses for credit. Some courses, I wish that they had offered when I was attending school in the late 60's. You can get credit for fly fishing at Montana State. At Montclair State, there is a course called "How to Watch Television!" Do think that we might be "dumbing down" this latest batch of College Students?

Speaking of college, a friend dropped her daughter to college at the eastern end of the State this past weekend. The mother gets home, and the daughter called saying that the start of school will be postponed due to the Hurricane, and that they are relocated students while the custodial staff mop up the dorms which experienced water damage. "Moving in weekend" during a Hurricane might not have been a great idea.

Our deck is back to normal, but Linda and I won't have many days to use it since we are so busy. Rain is forecasted for a portion of the weekend. The temperatures yesterday and for the rest of this week are fall like. Even the Weather Channel guy, Jim Cantore, said the same thing yesterday while reporting the Hurricane Damage in Vermont. Can winter be on our doorstep for us people who live in the Northeast? I just put away the winter coats and winter footwear not to long ago.

Politics -- There is a CNN report from a writer who expounded on three mistakes that our President has made during his Presidency. I am betting that my Conservative, Tea Party, and my Independents friends can come up with a few more than three.
The Hurricane sure did put a damper on political issues.

Gasoline is going up, and they oil companies are using the excuse that Hurricane Irene made them shut down many oil refineries. The fact is that many people heeded the warning and stayed home, and they left their cars in their garages or driveways. This meant nobody was buying gasoline, and the oil companies have to come up for a way to recoup lost profits. You and I will be paying for the lack of income and lack of profits which the oil companies experienced at the pump.

Well, I have to get to some quiet activities before the Queen wakes up. She has a busy day and evening social calendar booked in.

Have a great day at work or play!

Hello on Monday

Dear Friends,

I woke up early this morning. I had no reason not to sleep. I didn't even take a nap on Sunday. During my restlessness, I got to thinking about some friends and acquaintances. My mind was racing because they had an article in the Parade section of the newspaper with 7 ways to combat Alzheimer's. One of the 7 suggestions was "Not to be a loner!" Even if you are single, keep a circle of friends, or activities where you can interact with people. Our single friends already know this, and they do exactly what the hint suggested.

I then got to thinking about our friends who are fortunate to have significant others like the Curley's. I am so glad that I had a significant other to help me get through at least four medical issues where I required hospitalization. Then I started thinking about the couples whom we know, married or not that have gone through and continue to go through health issues. We have had friends who dealt with breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, shoulder surgery, Alzheimer's, ALS, Esophageal Cancer, Kidney transplants, Multiple Sclerosis, Pancreatic Cancer, Knee replacements, broken bones, Diabetes, War related disabilities, fibromyalsia (sp.), Hernia from Hell, Heart related issues, lung issues, etc. The list seems endless.
My point here is that the significant other was there in each person's time of need.
It is sad that some people lost their significant others too early, and that they are trying to fill that void of not having that person in their lives anymore.
This is another case of bringing up the fact "Life is too short!", and not to wait to do things, travel, see a play or movie, etc., and to enjoy who you are with right now.

On a happier note, Hurricane Irene has exited the Berkshires. A little flooding was the major repercussion of the storm. Some friends did get some water in there basements. As of 9:30 PM last night, our finished off basement was bone dry (We count or lucky stars).

Linda and I bonded together quite nicely watching DVR Recorded programs, but we watched police related / action programs.

The bonding ended when she put on a program called Combat Medical. I just didn't want to see the human ravages of war as wounded soldiers were being brought into temporary emergency rooms in wars zones. I have never been in the military. I didn't want to witnesses, even though it was studio made, what it is like being shot up, blown up, maimed, killed, etc. during combat.
I appreciate what all of my baby boomer friend's, who did enter the military during the Vietnam Era, and what they went through. This appreciation includes all military personnel, past and present. It really hits home for me because some of my friends never made it out of Vietnam alive. The survivors of the Vietnam Conflict have their own mental and physical health issues that never seem to go away.

Social Calendar -- I think that Linda wants a totally free day with me not bugging here.
I had a couple appointments which got cancelled, but I have enough outside yard work to keep me busy all day.

Have a great week at work or play.
Talk to you soon. The Curley Lad

Hello on Sunday

Dear Friends,

I woke up to the pitter patter or rain on the bedroom air conditioner at 5:30 AM. I couldn't believe that our local newspaper was lying in the driveway already. I got a golf umbrella from the garage, and rescued the newspaper before it floated down the street. I just got through skimming the newspaper, and the fliers which I like. Nothing peaked my interest except for a not so great lobster sale in one of the supermarket fliers. The sight of the lobster reminded me that we didn't have one lobster fest at the Curley home during this summer which is about to come to an end. We usually invite about 8 others to join us. I use our turkey fryer device and pot as the heat source and my lobster pot. I cook corn on the cob on the side burner of my gas grill. Each person has two lobsters. After cooking one each, I put the second one in the pot as we consume the first one. We might do some coleslaw too to compliment the meal. The hardest part is to find 8 people who like the meal. Some of our friends don't like lobster, and don't want to play with the lobster. Some people don't like mayonnaise which we like on our coleslaw. Some people don't know how to break a lobster and extract lobster meat from ever nook and cranny. Some people like to come to the lobster fest just to watch me eat because I eat every possible edible part of a lobster. Usually Linda has to hose me down when I am through eating even if I use a lobster bib. If you are thinking where are the clams, I would cook clams also, but not eat any of them because I am deathly allergic to them (and their mussel like relatives only).

Most of us have been focused on the weather channel for several days. The Weather Channel and Hurricane Irene are like a never ending movie. Do you think that it might be a bit crazy that the Weather Channel sends out their workers in the middle of a Hurricane just to give us something to watch? The death toll is up to 10 since the Hurricane struck the United States.
I wish that I owned a kayak so that I could paddle down some of the streets in Pittsfield which are notorious for their flooding. I am really hoping that the rain doesn't end up in our finished off basement. I had helmet gutters put on as part of the deck project this summer, and I am hoping that the water is being carried away from our house. Do we need to build an Ark?

Our son from Tewksbury called last night, and told us that the Berkshires are still on a direct path of Hurricane Irene. That path has not changed since the first predictions of where the storm was heading. My son even cleaned the gutters at his Colonial Style house on Saturday. He also cleaned the gutters at his restaurant Dough East Boston. Kevin and Kyla not only own the restaurant, but also they own the two floor apartment above the restaurant. Maintaining one place is difficult enough, but they have two to take care of now. Also, the restaurant is one block away from the harbor, so they are hoping that the ocean water doesn't reach the building.

Sports -- The Red Sox won two games yesterday with multiple rain delays. The first game started at 12:05 PM, and the last game ended at 11 PM.
The Yankee manager was extremely upset that he didn't play yesterday as the Red Sox dodged raindrops in their two games. Well, New York shut down their transit system at noontime, and many fans couldn't get to and from the game.

The Patriots looked absolutely awful during their preseason loss last night. Tom Brady, the quarterback for the Patriots, said before the game that he wanted to get some game hitting contact. He got more that what he hoped for. He got sacked, and knocked down multiple times during the 2.5 periods which he played in. The Detroit Lions have been the whipping boys for the past few years in the NFL, but not last night. The Coach of the Lions was a former Patriot Coach. He learned a lot from Coach Belichick, and beat the master at his own game.

I hope that our friends who went to Tanglewood last evening had a good time in the shed. My friend is a Vietnam Vet with a handicapped sticker which does allow him to park close to the Tanglewood gates. The floor inside the open air shed is packed dirt. I would imagine that he and his wife might have had a little mud on their shoes before they arrived home.

Speaking of Tanglewood, today's Ninth Symphony program has been cancelled due to the Hurricane. I think that this is the second time that they have ever cancelled a Tanglewood event.

I am so hoping that we don't lose electricity. All the electrical lines on our street are underground. Every other street in the former apple orchard which we live in has telephone poles carry electricity and telephone lines.
The wind is starting to pick up. Oh Darn!

Have to retrieve the Boston Globe from the driveway.
Talk to you soon maybe more than once throughout the day!
Have a great Sunday despite the wind and the rain. The Curley Lad

Hello on Saturday

Dear Friends,

We accomplished all of our tasks on Friday that we set out to do. Linda will be doing her washing today, and then it will pretty much be "business as usual."

We took a rain check on a political pasta dinner fundraiser last evening at the Polish Falcons' Hall. We decided to have a quiet evening at the Shamrock Restaurant and Pub. We sat at the bar and played some Keno, and I won enough money to pay for supper. I turned a $10 bill into $52.50. Linda made $5 of her $10 investment back.
I was so hungry that I ate the garni (the lettuce on which they placed the
coleslaw) on my plate and Linda's too. I had the fish and chips, and she had a lobster roll.

Well, the weather channel has people in the Berkshires in a Hurricane Irene frenzy. Bottled water and food has been jumping off of the shelves. The electrical company has called every single home owner, and warned them to be prepared for the loss of electricity. They said for all of us to be prepared for a multi day loss of electricity, and that they will be on top of the situation.

We get our weather related news out of Albany, and our locals forecasters are not in the gloom and doom mode. As I am watching the Weather Channel, the Hurricane has now been downgraded to a Category One Hurricane. The forecasters said not to treat the storm too lightly, and to expect wind and rain, but he said the coast was going to experience the more intense portion of the storm.

I have to stack some chairs on the deck, and take down some decorative flags, bag up deck pillows. I am going to get some bags of ice in case we lose electricity. I have all kinds of grills to cook food, but we might have to eat our selves out of the refrigerator, and freezer which we have in our garage.

Sports -- Both the Yankees and Red Sox lost their games last evening which means the Red sox still hold a slim lead in their division. The Sox play a day night double headed today and management have decided to shut down Fenway on Sunday.
The Patriots play a preseason game this evening in Detroit so I will overdose on Sports today.

Politics -- The President Obama had to cut his Cape Cod vacation short. He and his entourage packed up and headed back to Washington, D.C.

Well, I think that we are going to hunker down, and spend a quiet day together. I might pick up some corn on the cob too (they did have corn on the cob in the Dominican Republic, but it was like cow corn).
We are still trying to recover from our extended vacation caused by Hurricane Irene. It appears our adventure doesn't seem to want to end!

Have a great weekend.
Talk to you soon. The Curley Lad

Hello on Friday

Dear Friends,

There is no place like home! I don't want to see the inside of an airport or airplane for a while. I believe that won't happen until mid October when we visit our military son and his family in Southern Georgia. We do hope that this son will be back from Afghanistan according to his deployment orders.

We arrived at Logan from Miami a little late, but a 5:35 PM arrival wasn't bad. Our Limousine (a van) service was waiting for us as planned. We went directly to the Brodeur's Bed and Breakfast where we socialized for a little while before heading back home. My head hit the pillow about 11 PM, but Linda stayed up a little while longer. The ride home was not pleasant from Exit 7 until our Exit 2. The thunder, lightening, and rain was so severe that we slowed down to under 40 MPH. This wasn't even Hurricane Irene yet.

Linda did chat with our Tewksbury son who needs our baby sitting services for the next two weeks. We are going to play it by ear as of last evening's conversation because there is a chance that our daughter-in-law might not be able to fly out to California this weekend. We might be heading to Tewksbury by Wednesday.

Sports -- My Red Sox did win last evening, The Yankees won their contest too. They had to do it in a dramatic fashion by hitting 3 grand slams and scoring 22 runs in beating up the Oakland A's.

Storm -- Well the weather channel has us shaking in our boots up and down the East Coast including us people in the Berkshires who live 120 miles from Boston Harbor. They even had lighted signs on the Mass Turnpike warning us of Hurricane Irene. Has Hurricane Irene been following the Curley's and the Culver's from the Dominican Republic where we first encountered her?

Social Calendar -- I have a whole bunch of projects to do today. My car still has the Senior Golf Tournament Supplies for the tournament which I was suppose to work, but couldn't because we were on vacation. My lawn is beyond lush! Our suitcases are still in the back of our car. We have several days of clothes to wash, but I always do mine first.
We have nothing on our social calendar until Monday, and we want to keep it that way.
On the other hand, we could have a Hurricane Irene party! Linda doesn't want to hear such a thing, but I wouldn't mind carrying on the partying which we started in the Dominican Republic.

Politics -- None in our world since we are trying to recover from out trip.

Have a great Friday!
Enjoy the weekend even though it looks like wet weather is eminent.

Hello on Tuesday

Dear Friends,

I was in a deep sleep about 2 AM in the morning when I heard some voices next door. My neighbors' college age kid decided to have a few friends over while the rest of the family was out of town. It wasn't one of those loud parties where the neighbors would call the police, but it was enough to wake me up. Our neighbor just had a hot tub installed. I got to thinking what it was like to be a college age student, and to party into the wee hours of the morning. I also got to thinking about a party where a few guys and girls, who would be at the empty house, and they would have access to a brand new hot tub to play in. Well, those thoughts deterred me from getting back to sleep very quickly.

The positive thing about the news today is the Stock Market rose over 200 points yesterday. Warren Buffet stated that the rich should be taxed. There is no Republican that I know of who would vote for such a thing. The rich people have a club of their own, and they buy and sell politicians to protect their wealth. At times I do have those conservative thoughts when I hear of people who abuse our system which is supposed to help people in need. I start thinking that I don't want able body people getting my hard earned dollars each month because they like getting something for nothing.

Well, I had to resort to watching preseason professional football last evening since my Red Sox did not play. I was not impressed with the Jets starting team who played the first quarter of the game.

Linda and I are heading for Tewksbury in a couple of hours. It will be long pants day for sure. I went out to get the local newspaper today in shorts. I needed long pants and a light jacket. We are supposed to have a cookout at our son's place this evening, but it appears that it will be a "cook in": Grilled beef tenderloin cut into steaks and corn on the cob from the Berkshires. We haven't decided about a vegetable to go along with the meal.

Have a great Tuesday despite the damp weather throughout the State. Sun is in the forecast for Wednesday.
Talk to you soon. The Curley Lad

Hello on Monday

Dear Friends,

I am up early because I have a lot of things on my mind with respect to taking care of all the food details for today's 80+ Senior Members Golf Tournament at Berkshire Hills Country Club. I did pick up the Sirloin Burgers at Guido's on Sunday, but the boxes were so big that I had to bring them to Berkshire Hills C.C. and store them in the beer cooler at the club. It is raining out right now, and I am so hoping that the rain stops or is over for this tournament. If the tournament does get postponed, I will have to turn over the task of running the food portion of the event to my two friends since Linda and I will be heading to Tewksbury on Tuesday morning.

Speaking of Golf, we were able to get in 18 holes of golf for the Sunday Irish American Golf Tournament. An occasional shower, but no steady rain wasn't enough to postpone or stop the tournament. Our team score wasn't good enough to win, but we did have a lot of fun. Our foursome had the only female participant so who do you think won the closest to the pin, and longest drive for the ladies' division? The three males all won raffle prizes so our foursome went home happy.

National News -- Nothing really jumped out at me. The world is in its usual turmoil. Suicide bombers never seem to take a break. I love life, and I could never strap bombs on my body, and blow myself up. If we could somehow channel that hate, and lack of tolerance into positives forms of action, our world would be such a better place.

I am so hoping that the stock markets world wide continue on in the positive direction.

The Verizon Union workers are still picketing at the local company headquarters a 1/2 mile away from our home. It is the same old thing about the company trying to take away negotiated benefits. They want Union workers to start giving back these benefits which eventually leads to Union busting and weakening the Union. Republicans would like all unions to just disappear so that their rich friends can become richer. These givebacks always falls on the worker as management salaries keep on going up.

Well, I have about an hour's worth of work to load up the car with all the supplies for today's golf tournament. I pick my neighbor / friend who lives a few houses north of us at 8 AM. We will then go directly to the golf course, and set up for the tournament weather permitting.

Our baby boomer friend who had full blown Alzheimer's passed away a couple of days ago. I am guessing that the obituary notice will be in the local newspaper today.
This is another reason to enjoy life every day that you are on this earth. You never know what each day might bring along the road of life. I am starting to see some baby boomer friends, who are still working, becoming ill because of their job. Stress on the job can kill you just as quick as a heart attack! The would have, could have, should have attitude does no good when you are 6 feet under the ground.

Well, I have to get to work. I have a list a mile long of things that I can't forget to put in the car for today's tournament.
Talk to you soon. The Curley Lad

Hello on Sunday

Dear Friends,

Hope that you all had a pleasant Saturday like the Curley's did. We could only manage to attend two of the three events which we had on our social calendar. The Luau was the best event of the day. There was much food, fun, and merriment before the evening ended for us. When the mosquitoes started to get fierce, we headed home. Some friends were heading to the bar (The Lion's Den) in the lower level of the Red lion Inn in Stockbridge to listen to a local Irish band. The Curley's took a rain check!

The Luau had 50 to 80 people including kids at the event. We will be attending the Luau next year for sure! We had no idea how large that this party was going to be.

Speaking of rain, it appears that we might experience some rain, thunder and lighting during today's Irish American Golf Tournament at Skyline Country Club. It doesn't get much better for the Berkshire Hills Senior Golf Tournament that my friends and I are cooking for on Monday. We could do with some rain in the Berkshires, but why does it have to rain in the forecast for today and tomorrow? Oh Darn!

I love attending parties because you always see some interesting people at these parties. Many of my former students were there because they are relatives of the hosts of the party. You know that you are old when your former students have been working at the same General Electric / General Dynamics job for 32 years.
I asked one of my former students if he was married, and he said "Yes" but..!
He is married but he and his wife don't live together. Neither has a significant other, and they meet once a week, and have dinner together. I asked about financial matters, and he said that his wife is covered under his health insurance. I got to thinking that I never heard of a marriage like this, but it sure works for this couple. I don't think that his wife was at the party.

I also was sitting next to a woman who is three years older than me, and we started chatting about our families. Her husband retired at 55 years old (I think from the old General Electric). He had a pain in his side three years later, and died within a few months at age 58. This man was in great shape, and did everything he could to maintain that healthy body. Working with asbestos products at General Electric was one of the major reasons for his untimely death.
As we kept on chatting and she knew that my last name was "Curley", and she asked me if I was related to a Joe Curley who lives on Brighton Avenue in Pittsfield. I said "Yes", and that he was my Uncle. Well this lady tells me that she is a cousin to my Uncle Joe's wife Aunt Ruth.

I am watching the weather channel, and they are showing a stage collapse due to a violent storm at the Indiana State Fair. Many people were killed when the stage collapsed. Fun can change to tragedy in a heart beat!

Well, I am going to skim the Berkshire Eagle and Boston Globe before heading off to purchase 125 Sirloin Burgers for Monday's Golf tournament. I will bring the burgers home, and I will squeeze them into our refrigerator, and then head off to the Irish American Club Golf Tournament. I am going to wear bathing suit type of material for shorts because the forecast is 100% sure that we will be getting soaked. I might have to take a garbage bag to cover my boot too. This is going to be a long and wet day! Oh Darn!

Have a great Sunday!
If you live in the Northeast, we are going to get 1 to 2 inches of rain before this day comes to an end, and it continues on into Monday.
Talk to you soon. The Curley lad

Saturday, August 13, 2011

Hello on Saturday

Dear Friends,

When I woke up and picked up my local newspaper off of the driveway, the air temperature was fall like. We have been into these cool crisp mornings with temperatures rising to the pleasant temperatures as the day progresses. Could we ever live in a place like Texas where the temperatures has been in the 100's for over a month? Not! A couple of tough months of cold, ice, and snow are not a deterrent for the Curley's. We actually embrace it! I can't wait to fire up the crock pot, and cook some comfort food to help us make it through the seemingly long winters. Our reservoirs are usually filled to over flowing. We seldom have drought conditions.
When I heard on the news the other day that there is process which can turn urine in to drinking water, the thought was repulsive. I have no desire to drink anyone else's urine no matter how good and clean the process makes it.

On a happier note, the Yankees lost their game while the Red Sox won their game. I didn't stay up and watch the Red Sox game, but I did wake up around 1 AM, and listened to the last couple innings of the game on the radio. I didn't get up, but the win helped me to have pleasant dreams.

Coach Belichick did admit that his team looked pretty good the other night in their preseason game. Very few members of the starting team played during the game. It will be sad to see the coach have to cut some promising players since all teams have a roster quota of players which they must have before the regular season starts. The Patriots are already picked to be one of the top teams in the league.

The Stock Market continued in the positive range on Friday. The bargain hunters were at it again for a second day in a row.

Sarah Palin showed up at a county fair, and she was mobbed by people who were enthralled with her political views. The Republicans would have a better chance of defeating the President if the other candidates dropped out of the race, and put Sarah as the President's main challenger.

Our son is who is stationed in Afghanistan is doing okay. He has been working 12+ hour shifts. I can't say exactly what he is doing, but he has not been on the ground during these long shifts. He did say that the temperatures are hot, dry, and dusty. His base smells like a sewage treatment plant because the treatment plant is located in the middle of the base. Oh Darn!
While all of us are enjoying ourselves back in the States remember that there a lot of families like the Curley's who have loved on in harms way every single day during their deployments.

Social Calendar -- Linda and I only have three events that we are planning on attending today. We will be heading off to a Zucchini Festival in the town of West Stockbridge which starts at 10 AM. There is a members' family picnic at the Italian American Club which starts at noon. We also will be attending a Luau at friend's home around 4 PM. We might not make it to all three events, but we will be attending the Luau for sure.
I have to pace myself because I will participate somewhat (because of the boot) in the Irish American Club Golf Tournament on Sunday, and I will be cooking for the Berkshire Hills Senior Golf Tournament on Monday. Sunday there is a chance of a shower, but the Monday forecast says a little more rain will fall with temperatures hovering around 70 degrees.

Well, I have to do some quiet chores before the queen wakes up. Do I really do any quiet chores? No!

Have a great weekend!

Hello on Friday

Dear Friends,

I would usually start by saying that I tee off at 8:30 AM with the seniors golfers at the Berkshire Hills Country Club, but that hasn't happened since I started wearing my orthopedic boot at the end of June. I am currently in the process of trying to secure a credit towards next year's dues since I haven't played golf since June 28, 2011.

Linda had a busy Thursday yesterday. I was going from store trying to finish purchasing all the supplies needed to feed about 80 or more people hotdogs, hamburgers, and fresh corn on the cob for our Senior Members Golf Tournament. The last two items on my list is to purchase the hotdogs and hamburger rolls at one grocery store and sirloin burgers at Guido's Market.
I will make these purchases on Sunday morning before the Irish American Club tournament takes place at 11:30 AM at Skyline Country Club. As I said before, I will be wearing my boot, and most likely do only chipping and putting for the Irish American Club tournament.

We are busy again today. I have to finish some yard work while Linda has a couple of body maintenance procedure to deal with.

Sports -- The Yankees won their game yesterday afternoon, but the Red Sox had a travel day, and they did not have a game. I forgot that the Patriots had a preseason football game, and I missed it. Coach Belichik has already been accused of running up the score. Can he help if his second string players are better than the first string players on the other team?

News -- I see where the stock market rebounded from the loss the day before.
The bargain hunters were out in force wheeling and dealing.

I also saw where the Republicans had a debate. When people who didn't watch the debate were interviewed about the debate, most said that they are going to wait until the large number of candidates is whittled down. Former Massachusetts Governor Romney got heckled in Iowa. Anyone running, and who has a connection to a Liberal State as Massachusetts really doesn't have much of a chance of winning a Presidential election even if he or she is a worthy candidate. Universal Healthcare and Gay marriage started right here in Massachusetts, then look what happened on the State and National levels.

Did you see where a 17 year old male student killed his 49 year old female principal at a Religious school in Memphis? Using violence to solve a problem seems to be a solution for some people in the United States.

We had a bunch of ATM thefts in Pittsfield. The police did catch one guy. I actually called the police the other day. I was on my way to a morning therapy session, and I saw what I thought was the guts of an ATM machine, but not the whole machine. I was coming over the East Street Bridge about a
1/4 mile from our street. I saw this mangled metal box in the bushes. I couldn't stop the car and retrieve it because there were cars behind me. I called and talked to a policeman, and told him what I observed, and he said that he would send someone out there to retrieve the box. It was gone by the time that I got out of therapy. I hoped that my Good Samaritan tip helped to solve this rash of ATM thefts.

Last night we ended up at Berkshire Hills Country Club for supper. One of the guys at the bar saw me wearing my boot and asked if I was cooking for Monday's golf tournament. He said that he can't wait to have a well done burger. I said I would be wearing my boot, but two other friends and me would be preparing food for the golfers, and other golf course workers. I checked the forecast for Monday, and we might get a passing shower. I am hoping that any rain falls after the Tournament is over. Usually the first foursome of golfers is ready to eat around noon time. Our responsibilities are over a little after 5 PM which is when the keg of beer runs out!

Well, I am up early which means an afternoon nap will be needed for sure so that I can watch the Red Sox this evening.
The Curley's have to rest up for a Saturday afternoon / evening Luau. I am not sure what kind of tropical dish that Linda or me is going to make. Linda had something in mind, but I don't want to give it away yet!

Have a great weekend!

Hello on Thursday

Dear Friends,

Another day as planned in Curleyworld. I wish that the world we lived in was a pleasant as our world.

The stock markets throughout the world took a huge financial hit on Wednesday. Some of my friends who are involved with investments have had their telephones ringing constantly. The people with moderate incomes who have made some investments have been asking if their stocks have decreased to zero value. The wealthier people who call the investments advisors, are the most nervous of anyone who gamble in the stock market. Most of the advisors are telling their clients to sit tight because they believe that the market will turn around.

From my perspective, I am thinking of all the companies who cut out pensions for their workers, and said that 401 K would be the way that a person would get a pension. Well, tell this to that worker right now who had thoughts of possibly retiring this year or a few years from now. This wonderful, and most likely conservative concept, has just about destroyed the middle class.
You wonder why the Curley Lad is a proponent of Unions, defined benefit pension plans, etc. You have to have some looking out for benefits like health insurance, workers rights, guaranteed pensions, etc., because big companies have lost the concept of taking care of their loyal and dedicated employees who made those companies as wealthy as they are.

On a happier note, we have a busy social calendar today, but we will be going in opposite directions. I have to finish purchasing supplies for the Senior Golf tournament which a couple friends and me are running (the food portion) on this coming Monday. As of yesterday, we will be cooking for over 70 golfers both male and female. We will also be serving the pro shop workers, and some of the golf course maintenance people. I (and my friends) will be one tired buckaroo when that day ends. Yes, I will be wearing my orthopedic boot.

On another happier note, Linda and I will be grandparents for the fourth time. The newest bundle of joy will arrive in February. As of a Tuesday doctor's appointment, it appears that Max will be having a little sister. Even though Kyla is early in her pregnancy, they have a new test which is quite accurate to determine the sex of the child before an ultra sound can even show accurate pictures. Linda is so happy that she can shop for another girl besides Isabelle who belongs to Mike and Danielle. Linda shopped for boy clothes for our two boys, but as all of us know men don't require the daily change in outfits that females require. Men don't need cute shoes to match their outfits. Men don't need pocket books to match their outfits. Purchasing boy toys is another simple thing too. If we bring Max (or Gabriel) a couple of new match box cars when we visit him, he is so happy.

There will not be an unused coupon from all the ones that Macy's (and other clothing stores) sends us by way of the mail. The two Curley female grandchildren will be the best dressed in their respective cities.

Well, after picking up my golf supplies, I will be doing some yard work, and taking down the canopy that Linda and I set up for the Tuesday night cookout. I also have to return a borrowed table from an Irish Sister City Friend.

Have a great Thursday at work or play.

Hello on Wednesday

Dear Friends,

The Irish Sister City Committee cookout in the off and on rain went very well. I put my 10 by 10 canopy on the deck, and a table underneath the canopy. This table is where the main meal was served buffet style. People sat in the screened in room on the deck, and at the dinning room table. The only thing that hit the dinning room rug was some milk for coffee which was spilled by one of our members.

I cooked the burgers, dogs, and sausage patties in the rain. I wore a yellow slicker so that I stayed relatively dry. My neighbor acted as my assistant putting on slices of cheese on the burgers, and carrying the platter to the main table.

All the pot luck dishes which people brought were wonderful. From the pinwheel sausage through the rum cake, the multitude of different dishes was superb. My neighbor's lasagna was a big hit too.

Linda worked harder than I did making sure that everyone had what they needed from appetizers through the dessert. I think that she needs a day off soon. I hope that no one calls this morning so that she can sleep for as long as she wants.

We met our guests from Cava de Terrini who thanked us profusely for inviting them to the cookout. They were heading off to New York City this morning.
Our guests said that they would treat Linda and me with the same hospitality if we traveled to their city in Italy.

After most of the guests departed, a few of us sat in the screened in room and watched the Red Sox game. The guests knew that it was time to leave when I dozed with a can of beer in my hand, and the full can slipped out of my hand and hit the floor. The floor in the screened in room are just stained deck boards, so the mess that I created wasn't a big deal. I finished watching the Red Sox in bed. Not! I feel asleep two second after my head hit the pillow. I didn't have an afternoon nap on Tuesday so I was a bit tired.

I didn't have time to chat too much with a couple of conservative guests who were at the party. They asked me if I was going to attend the "Scott Brown"
sort of home town meeting today in Pittsfield. He is the one who took over Ted Kennedy's senatorial seat after Ted passed away. I told my friends that I was going to be working the UNICO Golf tournament today, and that I don't hang around with conservative friends for great lengths of time.

Social Calendar -- I have a 7 AM therapy session, and a vein procedure at 10:30 AM before I head off to the UNICO golf tournament. Linda has her 6 PM Knitting Gathering at Panera Bread, and that is it for today's activities.

Well, I have to empty the garbage cans from last night's party. Today is trash collection day for our neighborhood. There are still some cleanup things to do both inside and outside, but Linda took care of most of it last night before going to bed.

Have a great Wednesday.

Hello on Monday

Dear Friends,

Well, I feel so guilty that a diehard Red Sox fan shut off the television during the 8th inning (while in bed) and switched to the radio sleep mode. I fell asleep thinking that the Red Sox were going to lose the game since they were behind by a 2 to 1 score. To my surprise, the Red Sox won the game in the bottom of the 10th with some late inning heroics, and I missed it.
Luckily, the Red Sox show a replay of the game several times after the game is over so I will have to watch it second hand. Oh Darn!

Politics / Political fallout -- Our down graded credit rating has the rest of the world "shaking in their boots" as the saying goes. We will have to see what the worlds' stock markets do before this day is over. There are other countries in trouble like us in the United States so it isn't just the United States which has to change things around, and "jump start" our economy. It is the "blame game" right now which isn't good.

Our Tewksbury son called last night to see if we made it home alright. He said that when Max woke up from his afternoon nap, and he called for his Papa and Nana. I guess we as grandparents must have made a positive impression on him.
We also get constant pictures from the two cherubs who live in Valdosta, Georgia. Isabelle continues to swim like a fish in the pool in their home.
Gabriel is growing like a weed, and he wants to do what his big sister does, but that will take a little while longer for him to catch up to his big sister.

Like I said yesterday, we were hoping to have a little down time with respect to our active lives, but it won't happen in the near future. We will be attending another party this coming Saturday in Pittsfield, and it will be a Hawaiian theme party! On Sunday, I have the Irish American Organization's Golf Tournament at the Skyline Country Club. Since my boot is still a part of my life, I might be doing a lot of putting!

I will be wearing my boot today when we head off to the Saratoga Race Horse Track. When I get through this email, I have to select a cooler for food, snacks, and beverages which has wheels, and folding chairs. The walk from the Bus parking lot to the main gates of the track requires a good deal of walking. We also are not going straight home after the horse racing. There is a Casino a mile or so from the Race Track which only has slot machines. I will have to pace myself with respect to betting on the horses.
There was a big staked race on Sunday, and the favorite came in second. A long shot, who won the race by a nose, paid $36. The favorite's second place finish paid $2.80 on a two dollar bet. I am hoping that a couple of long shots win some races today.

We are in for a day of heat and humidity with a chance of an afternoon thunder storm.

Observation -- I was thinking about tags on items which we purchase that say it is against the law to remove them when you purchase the particular item.
We still have tags on pillows, the folding chairs which we take to the Race track, mattresses, kitchen towels, regular towels, cords on electrical appliances, tents, canopies, etc. I try to tell people that it is okay to cut the tags, but if you come to our house the tags are still on most of the items just mentioned. I am not allowed to cut tags off of items because I have cut cords on appliances, the fabric on things like pillows, etc. One time we got a brand new appliance, I thought I was cutting some tape on the device holding parts of the device together during shipping. Not! It turned out to be a thin flat wire about 3/4 of an inch wide that carried power to a CD player.

Well, I have to get to some quiet activities before I wake Linda up at 8:00 AM.
Have a great week at work or play.

Hello on Friday

Dear Friends,

Another day in Curleyworld went as planned, and I never left the house.
Linda did leave for a body maintenance procedure, pick some pictures which she processed the day before at the local CVS, and eventually went off to her BONCO picnic. I did do some outside chores one of which was to clean the white fence which the neighbor put up a few years ago because she has a pool in her back yard. The white fence (plastic) now looks like it is brand new.
The fence had all kinds of grass from me cutting the lawn and weed whacking.

Speaking of pictures, good thing that I married a person like Linda who is willing to transfer pictures from the computer, to a flash drive, and bring the flash drives to CVS, and spend countless hours selecting, and getting rid of redeye, cropping the pictures which she chooses to have prints made.
So many friends have pictures of their family, children, grandchildren, but you have to go on their computer, or their I Phone or Facebook to view the pictures. Linda stopped over to visit us partying at the neighbors home before she headed off to BONCO. She whipped out her newest Grandmother pictures, and showed the guests at the party. Some guests wanted to hire Linda to process their family pictures too.

The Stock Market dropped like a rock on Thursday. People starting selling massive shares of their stock portfolios, and the Market reacted. Some of those people who were hoping that their 401 K's would be doing well enough so that they could retire this year, have to rethink when they will retire.
We teachers or State and Municipal workers are so fortunate to have those Defined Benefit Pensions. Our monthly pension checks come in no matter what the Stock Market does.

Congress finally passed legislation to get most of the FAA workers back to doing their jobs so that they can pay their bills. The major stumbling black was that the Republicans didn't want the workers to have the ability to Unionize. The Republicans are still thinking that President Reagan is in office when he busted the Air Traffic controllers Union by firing all the employees. When stuff like this happens, I just become more of a diehard Liberal Democrat. I could almost never consider voting for a Republican unless the Republican showed a few Democratic ideals / leanings.

The dinner party last night at a neighbor's house was wonderful. The host could quit his job at General Dynamics, and just be a chef at his own restaurant. His wife would be the dessert maker which she excels at. The party was actually a farewell party for a couple who is on the road to Atlanta right now. His son and his wife will be having their second child in Atlanta any day now. These friends should be in Atlanta for a month or two before returning to the Berkshires. Atlanta is like many of those States flirting with the 100 degree mark along with the humidity.

Sports -- The Red Sox and the Yankees are now tied for first place in their division. The Yankees will be at Fenway this evening. I will be watching the game at our son's house in Tewksbury. Remember that "Good pitching could stop good hitting". The Yankees have been hitting the cover off of the ball during their 7 game winning streak. We Red Sox fans are hoping that the bats of the Red Sox come alive during this series.

Well, the Curley's are on the move again. We are off to our grandson Max's birthday party bash this weekend in Tewksbury. The party is on Saturday even though his actual birthday is the next day. There should be a little over 30 kids and adults who will be at the party. Linda and I will do our usual food preparation help. I have to practice to refrain from my anal retentive habit of trying to take over running the show, party, and function. Sometimes, I get carried away with the details so much, I end up calling the shots. This is why I have sore shins from Linda kicking me a lot under a table when I start going over the edge.

Have a great weekend!
There are a ton of things which we will be missing in the Berkshires this weekend including the Ethnic Fair, partying with our Sister City guests, etc., but I always tell people that Family takes precedent over everything else.
Well, I have to start loading up the car with things like our canopy, extra coolers, etc., presents for the birthday boy which we are not supposed to give him according to the Evite. Aren't grandparents supposed to spoil their grandchildren rotten? It is part of the joy of being grandparents.

Talk to you from Tewksbury on Saturday if I have a chance to do so.

Hello on Thursday

Dear Friends,

Wednesday was a quiet but pleasant day for the Curley's. Therapy, some chores, and afternoon nap, and leftovers for supper, and a Red Sox win kept me happy.
Linda did some errands, and shopping for some paper products for our August 9, 2011 Irish Sister City Cookout on the Curley Deck as well as attending her Panera Bread Knitting group gathering which made her happy.

We are busy once again, but we are going in different directions this evening. I will be representing the family at a dinner party. Linda is off to her one a month BONCO gathering at a friend's home which is located on beautiful Pontoosuc Lake. Originally I was going to be cooking for one of two book clubs which Linda belongs to, but many of the members were unavailable, so Linda cancelled the dinner meeting.

I have a few quiet chores to take care of, and I will weave in another afternoon nap before heading off to the dinner party. Linda has a body maintenance procedure this morning, and she has to whip up an appetizer for her BONCO gathering.

I skimmed the CNN news, but I didn't find anything that really jumped out at me. The world is in its usual turmoil, and you can all read about it your local and national newspapers. Bubba Smith the former NFL Star turned actor in all those Police Academy movies appeared to have died of natural causes at the age of 66.

Politics -- Jobs and the economy are the number one priority of President Obama, and should be for our congressmen and congresswomen. There are enough roads, bridges, and National and local parks which would provide and keep a large segment of our population employed for many years. Stopping the wars which we are involved in, and stopping the financial aid which we send to countries who don't manage the funds well could help pay for these jobs.

Observation -- My Radio talk show host friend has been stressing on his talk show program that Massachusetts is not small business friendly. As I look at the collection of permits that our non profit groups like the Irish Sister City Committee, UNICO, and Ethnic Clubs, etc., have to have just to sell a few food products, run a small raffle, it is amazing. On the other hand, the health department permits are to protect the organizations which we belong to as well as the public which purchases our products.
It is the paper work that kills small businesses.
Just think of what happens when any of us need medical care. The process which the hospitals and doctors have to go through to get paid is unbelievable. We had a friend who used to be a pediatrician. Her liability premiums were so high that she left the medical field to be a science teacher at a local Community College. Linda actually was a mentor to this doctor / teacher before she became a full time professor.

Sports -- The Red Sox and the Yankees both won last night, but the Sox did it in dramatic fashion by winning the game with a homer in the bottom of the ninth with two men out and no one on base. The Yankees used their bats and scored 18 runs to win their contest.
The Yankees come to Fenway this weekend, and we will see who the better team is!

I have been communicating (by way of email) with a baby boomer friend who has had a not so good time with a fusion operation on his back. My friend has to have his shoulder replaced in the very near future too. Playing college football years ago has pretty much decimated his body. When one body part gets fixed, another damaged body part rears its ugly head. This is another case where the care giver wife is definitely using the "for better or worse" part of their marriage vows. I told his wife that my strained Achilles is so trivial compared to what my friend is going through. We both retired in June of 2004.

Well, I have to do some quiet chores. Yesterday the telephone rang at 8:30 AM and woke Linda up from a deep sleep. It was a telephone call from my orthopedics guy's secretary. They had to reschedule my August 10 appointment because the Physician's Assistant will be out of town next week. I see him at the end of the month. It seems that I continue to bug Linda even when she is not in the same room as me. Oh Darn!

Have a great Thursday!

Hello on Wednesday

Dear Friends,

The Tanglewood on Parade Concert was wonderful last evening. The night ended with the playing of the 1812 Overture, and a fireworks display. My head did not hit the pillow until after midnight. I should be sleeping, but I have a
7 AM Physical Therapy appointment.
I wore my orthopedic boot for most of the day on Tuesday including while at Tanglewood. My strained Achilles felt pretty good as I took off my boot at
12:15 AM. I guess my Therapist was correct to tell me that I should wear it pretty much every waking hour. I failed at self diagnosing the problem.

As predicted, our evening of two couples grew in to a party of 12. One couple had five friends who wanted to party with us and the Curley's added three more of our friends to the mix. Of course, we ran into multiple friends throughout the evening so there was never any lack of conversation.

One former colleague of ours, who is a couple years older than the Queen and I, said that he has been experiencing some physical problems, and he has pretty much been incapacitated. He is having problems with his back, and he never knows when he wakes up whether he can function on that particular day.
His wife has been taking care of him, and all the chores both inside and outside the house. Even though his wife never came by our little gathering, I got the impression that his wife is probably having thoughts of trading him for a new and younger model. Linda was my chauffeur last evening, and she waited on me with respect to getting some of the epicurean delights which we shared. She has been having those same thoughts since I started wearing my boot on June 28, 2011. We never thought about situations like that when we first got married almost 40 years ago. We baby boomers are definitely in need of a healthcare system (ObamaCare) as we enter the Golden Years.

Politics -- I see where the United States earned its Moody's triple AAA rating with the Budget issue being resolved, but the stock market wasn't impressed, and it investors experienced a loss on Tuesday.

One of our guests last night wanted me to "smooth some ruffled feathers"
with one of my email recipients. The story goes that these two people met a gathering, and there was some sort of a political discussion (my Tanglewood friend is the campaign manager of one of the Pittsfield Mayoral candidates).
I guess the discussion went "sour", and my Tanglewood friend thinks that my blogger friend doesn't like her. Well, I don't know how this could happen because my friend on my daily blog and me are on opposite ends of any political discussion. My friend knows that I am diehard born and bred Liberal Democrat as he touts his Conservative political views, but we are still friends at the end of the day. As I always say, there must be more to the story that my Tanglewood friend told me last night. I will find out what really happened in the next couple of days. Like I always say "Life is too short" to hold a grudge!

Social Calendar -- After my Therapy, I have some quiet chores to take care of. I don't have anything else on my social calendar. Linda is booked in for her Panera Bread Knitting group at 6 PM, and that is it for us today. I will weave in an afternoon nap, and watch the Red Sox while enjoying a Chicken Novena while she is gone. I had some friends make fun of me and my Chicken Novena so I am going to enjoy it by myself. Alone is okay for a change!

Well, I have to put on my therapy gear, and head out the door.
Talk to you soon. The Curley Lad

Tuesday, August 2, 2011

Hello on Tuesday

Dear Friends,

It was another pleasant day for us in the Berkshires. Pittsfield missed a thunderstorm, but some towns in the southern part of our county did get some rain.

My therapy session went well except for the fact that the therapist said that I should be wearing the orthopedic boot for most of the day except for when I am sitting on my butt or sleeping. I told the therapist that when my leg starts feeling good, I have not been wearing the boot. He said that I wasn't supposed to be doing that. I told him about the Casino trip, and me feeling good enough that I didn't wear the boot. He said that I should have been wearing the boot. He said that I should be wearing the boot through the month of August. He said that the poor circulation in my legs will make the healing process for me longer than the normal person. Oh Darn!

On a happier note, we are off to a concert at Tanglewood this evening. It is called "Tanglewood on Parade". It is a blend of all kinds of music. The gates open at 2 PM, but the concert doesn't start until 8 PM. Our plan is to arrive a little after 4 PM. It was supposed to be us and one other couple, but our group has been increasing as we have been communicating with the other couple and other sets of friends. Linda is missing another Tuesday Mah Jongg session, but the food, fun, and merriment will make up for her loss.

Politics -- The United States budget is almost a done deal, but most of us want to know all the details when it finally is passed and signed by the President. The public wants to know why it took so long to reach a compromise, but we all know that each party has its interests to protect.
The word is that the Republicans got more of what they wanted than the Democratic Party.

Observation -- While on the Casino bus trip the other day, there was a guy sitting next to another person whom we (mostly me) do know. It took me the whole trip to realize who this person was. This person was the former director of the Girls and Boys Club. I was on a first name basis with the guy over the years, and I felt sad that I didn't recognize him until we got off of the bus. He has become a little more frail than the vibrant guy who I once new. I guess that I got a reminder that the Golden Years aren't cracked up to what they are supposed to be. "Father Time" takes a toll on all of us in different ways. This friend never chose to get married, but he gave back to the community in so many ways when he ran the Boys and Girls Club. This got me thinking how lucky that I am to have someone to grow old with even though I drive her crazy at times.

Speaking of driving her crazy, we needed to do some touch up painting / staining on the deck. I grabbed a partial container of some leftover stain.
I started touching up some spots with the wrong color stain. Linda had to correct my mistake while she was still in her night gown. We found the correct container of stain, and she had to paint over my mistake. If someone ever recorded the conversation we had during this paint fiasco, it would have been a big hit on Facebook. Don't forget that she was dealing with a guy who is color blind. I would bet that Linda was thinking at that moment the single life was looking pretty good.

Sports -- The Red Sox lost and the Yankees won their game. The Sox now have a one game lead in their division. Oh Darn!

My UNICO Golf Committee meeting went well. My friend and I finally got some numbers for shirt sizes for the golfers for our August 10 UNICO Golf Tournament. We have to turn in the sizes to Jones' Trophies so he can order the shirts which we are putting in the golfers' goodie bags. Let us hope that it is a rain free day since we have golfers teeing off in the morning and afternoon.

Well, I have to do some quiet activities like water the flowers all around the house, and read the local newspapers. I do have to eventually cook /grill up a pork loin, and thinly slice it so that it will go on a baguette (thinly sliced too) along with an interesting mustard for tonight's Tanglewood adventure. Linda also made Quinoa concoction which she saw on the food channel. Our friends are bringing a homemade Quiche. It will be a fun evening before this night is over.

Have a great Tuesday!
Talk to you soon. The Curley Lad

Monday, August 1, 2011

Hello on Monday

Dear Friends,

The Queen and I had another pleasant day on Sunday. We missed a beautiful day outside as we tried to have some fun at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. We both came home under our set budgets so we won't be able to take any vacations, or do any house renovations. We did hang around with another couple, and within 15 minutes, the husband shows me a voucher that that had $400 on it. Their lucky slot machines are the "Wheel of Fortune"
ones. This couple is smart. They don't gamble all day long. The husband even takes a book, and reads during some down time. His wallet was ended up being over $500 in the positive range.

Politics -- I did see where the national budget crisis is getting close to being resolved. With this news, the Asian stock market today is already heading in a positive direction.

News -- The Norway wacko bought bomb making chemicals over the internet.

Observation -- It is hard to believe that it is August already. I can hear the teachers already thinking about the start of school. They too are asking why their school vacation seems to be flying by. While partying at the Rhode Island beaches last week, a person at the beach and the cookout made the comment about "teachers having the summers off." At least three of my email recipients are teachers. They have been doing school related things for a portion of time this summer. One is taking a college course related to her subject area, another has been at a subject related convention in her field of expertise and do scheduling of her staff and the other one has been working on scheduling, but he has to create this schedule with two less people in his department. Why is that that some people are convinced that the other person has an easier job than the person making comments like this?

Social Calendar -- We have another full week where one or both of us are busy on any given day, and this includes the weekend too. I am the busy one today. I have a 7 AM Physical Therapy appointment, and a 6 PM Golf Committee meeting. Normally, Linda would be playing golf with a few girlfriends this afternoon, but she is still feeling some ill effects from her "Hernia from Hell" surgery back in February.

Sports -- The Red Sox and Yankees both won on Sunday which means the Red Sox still maintain their slim lead over the Yankees.
The Red Sox made some trades over the past few days, but the Yankees decided to stick with the team which they currently have.

As I watched a sports talk show program on Sunday night before I fell asleep, the host of the show was not happy with one of the two people which they the Patriots signed the other day. The host doesn't think that the Haynesworth guy, who they hired to play defense, is going to workout as a Patriot. I say give the player time.

When I made the comments about our military son heading to Afghanistan on Sunday, the English teacher email recipient said that she has a class project of writing to military personnel in war zones. As soon as our son gets an APO mailing address, she wants her students to start sending letters to our son as well as other military people in harms way. This is such a creative way to get students to write and express themselves by the written word. This letter writing will take place when school starts in September.

Well, I have some quiet activities to take care of before heading off to Therapy today.

Have a great week at work or play!
