Hello on Friday Morning

Dear Friends,

Thursday went okay. Our morning golf didn't happen. Of course, a few hours after my buddies and I canceled golf, the sun came out, and it turned into a beautiful day.
Our Friday morning golf is in jeopardy because a front is coming through in the next hour or so followed by a second front this afternoon.

If golf doesn't happen, I will bake my soda breads, and Irish Whiskey Cake. It seems like that there always are chores to do.

The Sunday weather forecast for the Ethnic Fair gets worse each day. There is now a 50% chance of a late day shower. The Ethnic Fair takes place rain or shine. I don't want to think about the left overs of 50 pounds of Irish Bangers (breakfast sausages). I don't have any extra room in my freezer for the left overs at the current time.

Sports -- My Red Sox were victorious in their Thursday afternoon game.

Sports continued -- An hour before yesterday's Red Sox game, it was reported that Ortiz, and Manny were using Physical Enhancement Drugs in 2003. In 2003, it wasn't illegal. The rule banning drugs came out as a result of the number of people who tested positive during 2003. The list of people who tested positive in 2003 was supposed to be destroyed, but it apparently wasn't. There are still over 100 more baseball players on this list.
My position is that if it was legal in 2003, then there should be no issue.
These drugs have been in sports like baseball, and football, and other sports for a while. When you are playing at such a high level, and you are trying to get an edge, or recover from an injury, these drugs seemed to have been the answer. The drugs should have been made illegal a long time ago.
Also, how come I sign those privacy documents when I seek medical help, or go into the hospital? Do these privacy rules apply to athletes?

Social Calendar -- I think that Linda is thinking about attending a play later on today.
I know that she has her monthly breakfast with her Pittsfield High School retiree friends at 8:30 AM.
If I have golf, I was hoping that she could represent the Curley's at the Mayoral reception for our Italian Sister City Guests who arrived on Thursday afternoon. If my golf is canceled, I will attend the reception which takes place at 10:30 AM at City Hall.

Politics -- I want to know how the meeting went at the White House with the black Professor, and the officer who arrested him. I wish that I could have a couple of beers with the President.

Observation -- I thought that I had the perfect solution to wash my mud encased clogs for the Tanglewood concert the other night. I put the "Clogs" in the top rack of the dishwasher, and turned on the 5 minute rinse cycle. It didn't work,. There was still mud in every nook and cranny. I needed to hand wash the mud off of the "Clog".

Have to go and read the newspaper, and check when the rain is going to fall.
Have a great weekend.

Hello on Thursday Morning

Dear Friends,

Our Wednesday went as planned. Mom's visit to the the family home in Lee went well. Mom arrived by Cabulance around 9:30 AM, and stayed until about 2 PM. My sister and I whipped up lunch for Mom, Dad, and Aunt Gladys. The seniors appreciated our efforts.
My mother said that I should get a haircut. She says this all the time. She wants my hair cut short, and for me to have a part in my hair, just like my high school picture which she has sitting on dresser drawer in the nursing home.
While we were in Lee, I installed a couple of air conditioners while my sister washed a load of clothes for dear old dad. There must have been some sort of jell pack in Dad's clothes because it exploded in the wash, and my sister had to do the clothes multiple times.
Yes, Mom didn't want to go back to the nursing home, but she still needs a good deal of outside help if she does eventually come home.

Linda's Mah Jongg session went well on Wednesday evening. The ladies played from about 6:30 PM until 10 PM. They normally finish playing a little after 9 PM. They were suffering from Mah Jongg with drawl since they haven't played for a couple of weeks.

Social Calendar -- We have another one of those days where I have many things to do during the day, but Linda has only one thing to do in the evening. I tee off with two other friends at 7:28 AM weather permitting. I don't play golf in the rain which it is doing now. The front has almost moved through the Berkshires. The rain event should be over soon. The best part of the day is supposed to take place at 5 PM with total sunshine.
Linda's evening event is a BONCO picnic at the home of one of the players who lives on Pontoosuc Lake. This potluck dinner affair, and pontoon boat ride is always a big hit for all the BONCO players as well as the women who act as substitutes throughout the year.

Sports -- The separation between the Red Sox and Yankees is growing. The Sox lost another one as the Yankees won their game.

Politics -- I think today is the day where the Black professor, and the arresting Cambridge police officer sit down with President Obama at the White House over a couple of beers. Let's hope that the issue is put to rest after the meeting.
Speaking of beer, A Massachusetts Politician thinks that the three people mentioned above should not be drinking Budweiser, Miller, or Coors products because they are owned by foreign conglomerates. They should be drinking the Sam Adams group of beer products because they are made in the good old U.S.A. I do agree!

I have to do some baking during the next few days. I have my raisins soaking in some Irish Whiskey as I type this e-mail. These raisins are for the soda breads which I am making for the Soda Bread Contest at the Irish American Club Booth. The judging takes place at the Pittsfield Ethnic Fair on Sunday from 12 PM until 6 PM.
I have to make a double batch of the Irish Whiskey Cake since some of our bakers are out of town. The Irish Whiskey Cake is for our Irish Sister City Booth which will be located right next to the Irish American Club's booth.
I also have to pick up the 50 pounds of Irish Bangers which I pre-ordered at a local meat market.

Of course, all my plans might change if we get the call that our granddaughter is on her way to the hospital in Boston to deliver our grandchild. I want to have the soda breads, and Irish Whiskey cakes all made if we do get that telephone call. Actually, I am hoping that the Baby arrives after August 3 since we are booked in for a bus trip to the Saratoga Horse Racing Track on this coming Monday. Opening day for the six week racing program began yesterday.

Well, I have to do some quiet chores before I select my golfing clothes.
Have a great Thursday.

Hello on Wednesday Morning

Dear Friends,

Our Tuesday went exactly as planned.

My sister dealt with Mom and her hearing aid. I think someone at the nursing home put her hearing aid in the container which has a solution for her dentures. Water and the hearing aid don't mix!
While my sister was dealing with that situation, I was with dad for his three month check up. His blood work results were great. The doctor ended the visit with a blood pressure check, and it was 120 / 72. Not bad for an 85 year old guy. The doctor discussed his bum knee, and back pain. The doctor suggested that he live with both of the situations. A knee replacement at 85 won't be a good experience combined with the back problem.

Tanglewood on Parade was fun. We hooked up with another retired teacher couple so that there was 6 of us on our little plot of land on the Tanglewood lawn. We had much food, fun, and merriment. The evening always ends with the 1812 Overture. I had fallen asleep, and was woken up when the first cannon went off. There were fireworks too!

As we were all packed up, and ready to leave Tanglewood, one of our female friends couldn't find her cell phone. We searched on the dimly lit grounds, and we didn't find it. Our friend remembered that she left the cell phone in the drink holder place of her folding chair. Her husband had bungy corded up the cooler, chairs, and a table. Linda asked me to call the woman's cell phone. The woman's cell phone was on vibrate so how could we hear the cell phone?
Visualize two women with their heads leaning on the already packed up chairs trying to hear the vibrating cell phone. Well, they had to unpack the chairs, and luckily the cell phone was exactly where she left it in the drink holder part of her folding chair.
Also, as we got to the car, and with our feet covered in mud from the severe rains from the night before, it started to sprinkle. Well the sprinkle turned into a driving rain, and ride home was a slow one.
We had to take a shower to get the mud off of our feet before we went to bed. Luckily I wore a pair of Crocks without socks. I will hose them down at some point today.

My Red Sox lost their extra inning game, and the Yankees were beaten too.

Social Calendar -- Linda doesn't have to move until she hosts a session of Mah Jongg at our house this evening.
I will be in Lee at the home of our parents. We are having mom come home for a couple hour visit. I am going to bring some leftovers for lunch. I know that she will say that she will want to stay home, but she is not ready to physically do so.

Observation -- I have come to the conclusion that I want to be surrounded by happy, and upbeat people. I don't want to be surrounded by negativism. At one point yesterday, I was in my car listening to the radio. Rush Limbaugh was on the particular station which I was listening too. I can't stand Rush, and his "Mega Ditto" followers. When Rush's 3 hour program is over, we are bombarded with Sean Hannity for another 3 hours. Good thing that we have choices, and can switch channels. I forgot to mention that this radio station has Glen Beck as part of their morning show. Enough already!

Have a great Wednesday.

Hello on Tuesday

Dear Friends,

We spent the day together attending the funeral, the reception after the funeral, taking a wine nap, and returning to the Mayor's home in the evening.

The funeral service was an hour and one half long. The Church was packed with funeral goers.

The reception was at a downtown eatery which can hold several hundred people. We were the last ones to leave the reception along with my Irish Sister City President. This was almost a three hour affair for us. They had an open bar which served beer and wine besides the usual soda and water. We got caught up in drinking wine.
When we came home we needed to take a power nap (Wine can do this too you when you start drinking at noon). Well, our power nap lasted from 3 PM until 6 PM. I actually had to wake Linda up so that we could go to the Mayor's house at 7 PM for more fun and merriment mixed in with consoling the grieving Mayor. The evening event ended close to 11 PM.
No, I didn't miss the Red Sox game. The flat screen television was on when we arrived at the Mayor's home. When I noticed that people really weren't watching it, I switched to the Red Sox game.

We did get our share of rain on Monday. The "slight" chance of rain brought several inches of rain to Pittsfield. Linda would have gotten rained out if she did play her usual Monday golf.

I did miss the family meeting at the nursing home, but I called my sister to find out exactly what took place. My father has an appointment today with his primary care physician which I am going to try to attend.

I say "try to attend" because we are booked into "Tanglewood on Parade" this evening. Our Governor, Deval Patrick, will be attending the event too, but he will not be sitting on the lawn like us. He most likely will have a front row seat in the shed.

Observation -- I want to discuss: tags sticking out of garments, tattoos, and earrings. While at the funeral, I saw two females with tags sticking out in the back of their garments. I wanted to tell them that they were sticking out, or actually fix them. What is the proper etiquette that I should have employed?
Another person had a tattoo on her left shoulder. It appeared to be the name of her boyfriend. I was wondering if the woman and her boyfriend were still together. I was thinking it might be time for me to get a tattoo. Not!
Finally, I saw a gentleman ,who appeared to be a baby boomer like me, and he was wearing a very discreet earring. Is it time for me to have my ears pierced? Not!
Am I just an old fashion type of guy?

We might have a rain free day before a front rolls in on Wednesday followed by another one on Friday.
The weather prognosticators are still saying that Sunday should be a nice day. This is when the Pittsfield Ethnic Fair takes place from 12 PM until 6 PM.

Have a great Tuesday.

Hello on Monday Morning

Dear Friends,

Our Sunday went exactly as planned. I departed the house at 7:45 AM for the ITAM Lodge. I was within a half a mile from my lodge when I realized that I forgot to bring the cake that I had made the day before.
The picnic went well in between a few rain drops. I did a little grill work, but mostly gopher type of stuff.
I did leave the picnic at the time which I planned to do. I had to go home and get most of the grease off of my body from my stint on the grill.

Linda had fun at her shower in Connecticut. The shower took place in the home of the mother to be.

Good thing that they had the wake at the Church instead of the Funeral Home. There were so many wake goers. I met my UNICO Brothers and Sisters at the scheduled time, and we all walked in together. The Mayor is a member of UNICO.
They did have an open casket in the Church for the Mayor's wife.
We will be attending the Funeral at 10 AM this morning. I am not sure if we will stay too long at the reception after the funeral because there is a family meeting at the nursing home in Lee at 1:15 PM.
I think that Linda is also planning on playing golf with her girl friends at 3:30 PM.

My Red Sox lost while the Yankees won their game on Sunday. The fans are getting restless in Boston. The Sox play at 7:10 PM this evening so you know what I will be doing.

Observation -- Since we have been doing the wake and funeral thing, at the impromptu cookout on Saturday night, us two males asked our wives what would they do if we happened to die right now. Both wives said that they would sell their houses, and move into a place where they wouldn't have to take care of the house.
It would either be moving into a small apartment, or into a one floor condo. You would never see any of our wives cutting the lawn, or tending to flower beds, etc. Just pay the maintenance fee, and let someone else do it for you.
I really haven't thought about what I would do if the situation was reversed. I might stay in the house for a little while, but as the aches and pains get worse as we age, I too might consider moving into smaller living quarters.
We didn't get into a discussion of finding another companion to replace our irreplaceable spouses.
I will save those thoughts for another e-mail.

Have a great week at work or play.

Hello on Sunday Morning

Dear Friends,

Our Saturday went as planned including an impromptu cookout, and some card playing. We finally used the deck, and screened in room on the deck. The men against the women card playing didn't go well for the men. The food before the card playing went well. We had grilled steak, chicken, vegetables, and corn of the cob. There was much fun and merriment before we headed off to bed.

My track walking went okay on Saturday without too many distractions. I did get behind a woman with no body fat who was wearing skin tight track pants. She walked by me going so fast as she was being dragged by her black lab who was on a leash. I did observe that she had buns of steel which didn't wiggle.
I also saw one of my senior golfing buddies. I would have walked with him, but he doesn't see well, and he is pretty much deaf. You can't carry on a conversation with him because his hearing is so bad.

I did go from the track to visit Mom in the nursing home. I had the nursing home staff put her in her wheel chair, and we went outside. We were drinking whiskey and water out of the back of my car at 10 AM in the morning. My father happened to show up as we were finishing our second drink. My father brought Mom a coffee, but she was too zonked out after she finished her second whiskey and water. You may think that my giving Mom some alcohol is bad, but what does Mom have to look forward to each day in that nursing home?
My sister and I are going to try another home visit on Wednesday. After the visit, Mom will not want to return to the nursing home for sure. She keeps telling all of us that she wants to go home, but she needs two people to lift her, or one person with a lift, which they have been using in the nursing home.

In a few short hours, I will be leaving to help out with the Annual Family Picnic at the ITAM lodge. It looks like we will be dealing with scattered thunderstorms. It is hot and humid right now. The weather channel is predicting the potential of severe thunderstorms right in the middle of the 12 PM to 5 PM picnic.

Linda will be eventually leaving for an afternoon baby shower in Enfield, Connecticut with a friend while I am at the ITAM.

I will be escaping the ITAM around 4 PM, and heading home to take a shower. I have to put on my wake type clothes. My UNICO brothers and sisters hopefully will be going into the wake as a group at 5 PM. I also found out that the reception after the Monday funeral will take place at a downtown eatery.

The political fallout continues because of the comments which the President made during his health care speech a few days ago. It will soon be over just like the weeks of Michael Jackson coverage when he overdosed on pain medication.
Speaking of Michael Jackson, I see where the family is going after the doctor who kept on giving Michael Jackson those pain pills. Why don't people accept responsibility for their own actions? It seems that we are so quick to blame someone else for our own shortcomings. Is this the American way?

My beloved Red Sox won their game while the Yankees' winning streak came to an end.

Well, I have to do some quiet chores before getting dressed for the ITAM picnic. I am going to wear old clothes because I got grease, and grime over every part of my clothes including my footwear.

Have a great Sunday.

Hello on Saturday Morning from the Berkshires

Dear Friends,

It is great to be back home. My first e-mail elicited some response to my comments about the President making a slight error during his health care speech a few nights ago by saying the the Cambridge, MA police acted "stupidly" when they arrested an elderly black male with a cane in his own home. A neighbor had called the police, and said that there was a possible burglary. The police went to the home expecting to catch and arrest a bad guy. Well, there was no burglar. It was just the owner of the house. I guess the black male became verbally abusive so that the police cuffed the guy. So after a few days of the media trying to create news, the President has invited the arresting police officer, and the black male to the White House so that they can put the issue to rest.

We did have a pleasant Friday which ended in a date / cultural event. Gary Puckett, from the band right out of the 60's called "The Union Gap", put on a great show. The Colonial Theater was filled with baby boomers, and Gary's performance was awesome. Everyone left the place feeling good. At one point during the performance, Gary asked all the veterans to stand up, and take a bow. He sang a song directed at the veterans. The tears were flowing for many of the concert goers.

We did arrive home just in time to see the Red Sox break a five game losing streak. The Yankees won their game. The Yankees are still leading the Eastern division.

The rain continues to fall on a daily basis in the Berkshires. As we exited the Theater on Friday night, it was raining quite hard. It continued to do so for several hours.

Social Calendar -- My first task of the day is to make a cake for the Annual ITAM picnic which will be taking place on Sunday from 12 PM to 5 PM. There is a 60 % chance of severe thunder showers.
After the cake making, I then will do a little track walking before heading off to visit Mom (which I didn't do on Saturday).

Linda will have several hours of peace and quiet, but she has to wrap a baby shower present, and go off and get a package of diapers for the shower. The baby shower is on Sunday in Connecticut.
She also wants to attend a Craft's Fair at Lilac Park in Lenox. She was looking for a girl friend to do so. She did say that with all the rain, the Craft's Fair could be a wet and soggy event.

Speaking of the track walking, I did observe some interesting people on Friday. Visualize a lady with snow white hair, who was my age or younger, walking the track in the opposite direction than the rest of us walk. Most of us walk from right to left, not this lady. She walks one time from left to right, and then switches from right to left. I think that she was doing this just to drive me nuts.
I did get behind another lady who I think was wearing thong underwear, not that I was looking. I was getting a little distracted, so I passed her. If she was looking at my butt as I passed her, she would have noticed that I had no underwear lines. I was wearing a pair of light weight Red Sox shorts with the family jewels unharnessed.

On Sunday, Linda and I will have to go to the wake for our Mayor's wife. We will not be going together. I am meeting my UNICO brothers and sisters at 5 PM so that we can enter the wake as a group. Linda will be arriving back from the shower later than 5 PM, so she will be attending the wake alone.

Observation -- Our deck is not getting a workout this year since the weather has not been cooperative. Our cookouts have been minimal. We normally would be entertaining friends in the screened in room on the deck, or I would be watching some of my Red Sox games out there. Not this summer!
Reading the Sunday newspapers is another activity which we have done only one or two times so far, and it is almost the end of July. I am guessing that the fall will be hot and dry so that I will be able to make up for the many times which the weather has kept me way from the golf course.
I am trying to figure out if Global Warming has anything to do with the weird weather we have had so far this summer.
Good thing that we weren't on the Tanglewood lawns last evening. The rains came right in the middle of the Saturday night concert. More tourist dollars went down the drain with the rain.
We are supposed to go to Tanglewood on Tuesday night for a program called "Tanglewood on Parade". We will not be attending the concert if it rains. Yes, the forecast is for a chance of a thunderstorm for the next week or so.

Have to go, and make a cake. I have to use a hand mixer for at least two minutes. Do you think that I might disturb Linda as she tries to sleep until at least 8 AM. If the noise from the mixer doesn't wake her, the smell of a cake baking in the oven might do so.
Talk to you soon. The Curley Lad

Hello on Friday Morning

Dear Friends,

I would normally be selecting clothes for golf with my senior friends today, but there is a three day golf tournament at my club.
This lack of me being able to play golf is really okay since I have so much to do today especially when you arrive home from a multi-day trip.

The first quiet activity is to figure out where I am going to put 36 bottles of Finger Lakes wine. I might turn my small refrigerator in the cellar into a white wine chilling device since I am trying to stay away from beer consumption.

As the neighborhood wakes up, I have to cut the lawn, and do some weed whacking.

I also have to make a trip to the East Side Cafe to pay for a bus trip to the Saratoga Race Track for Linda and I. There is still room on the bus, if any of my readers would like to join us. The usual suspects can't make the trip which is scheduled for August 3, 2009, which is on a Monday. The price is $22 per person. We all bring some kind of covered dish. Even if we don't win betting on the horse races, there will be much food and merriment. A bunch of people go early and put picnic tables together. There is much fun and merriment on this trip. The trip is organized by the family who owns the East Side Cafe.

I also have to stop in and see Mom at the nursing home. If I am unable to do so today, I will do so on Saturday morning.

We are off to a cultural event this evening. Gary Puckett from a band called "The Union Gap", will be entering us a the Colonial Theater.

I can't believe that my Red Sox were ahead of the Yankees by two games when we left for our Finger Lakes Trip, and then the Sox were behind by two games when we returned from out trip.

We couldn't use our lap top while we stayed at the Showboat Motel, and Restaurant on Seneca Lake. They had no WiFi service. I also chose not to purchase a newspaper while we were there. The world continued on in its usual chaotic manner.
We did watch the President's speech on the Health Care Issue. You have to admit that our leader is at such ease while in front of a microphone. Isn't it great to have President who can "think on his feet?"

The rains came in around midnight. The front has pretty much exited the Berkshires, but there is a chance of an afternoon shower once again.

As the month of July comes to an end, Linda and I have our bags all packed, and we are ready for a trip to East Boston. Kyla has a due date of August 8 for their first child. Even though due dates aren't firm, we will be ready for the blessed event. Linda and I can't wait!

Well, I have to read the local newspaper, and start my first quiet activity.
I would also like to do a little track walking. I did do two one hour walks while we were in the Finger lakes region. I think that the wine tastings, and the food that we consumed might have wreaked havoc on my healthy eating.

Have a great weekend.
No, we do not have a free weekend!
Our busy lives have returned once again. The Curley Lad

Hello on Friday Morning

Dear Friends,
Our Thursday went well. I did my track thing while Linda was still asleep in the morning. We both just chilled for most of the day before we headed off to Third Thursday in downtown Pittsfield. We made sure that we arrived at 5 PM because severe thunderstorm warning were being broadcast. We walked the streets for a little over any hour as thunderheads started to roll in. The rain did arrive, but we were at the East Side Cafe for some wood fired pizza when it happened.
We did get quite a thunder and lightening show while we were consuming pizza. Some areas in neighboring New York State received golf ball size hail.

Social Calendar -- I will be heading out the door around 7:15 AM to pick up a friend from New Jersey who is in the Berkshires for a few days with his wife. He will be playing with us in our regular Friday Senior Golf event. We are finally having our pizza party around 1 PM which has been postponed several times.

Social Calendar -- We don't have anything else planned for after golf because we might hook up with some other friends for supper. Let us say that we were working with a flexible schedule for today.

Politics -- The usual mayhem throughout the United States, and the world. The Supreme Court nominee held her own during the hearings on Thursday. A vote might take place on this coming Tuesday to accept her a a Supreme Court Judge.

Observation -- I did throw out the remainder of the fruit that I did tried to dehydrate. It was so inedible that Linda thought that I might break a tooth if I continued to eat it. I was afraid to put the dehydrated fruit in the garbage disposable even though we own a Maytag disposal before the company changed into making a cheaper product.
I learned a lesson that some of those "As seen on television" products might not be "cracked up" to what they are supposed to be.
Have you noticed that even though pitchman Billy Mays is dead and buried, they are still broadcasting those same infomercials which he is featured in? It is like the dead talking to us. Maybe his widow gave permission for this to happen.

Have to do my morning routine before heading out the door.
Have a great weekend.

Hello on Thursday Morning

Dear Friends,

Wednesday went okay in the Curley household. I was able to play 18 holes, and the round was over by 9:30 AM. I did start off alone, but hooked up with a 39 year old friend of the the family. He was playing from the championship tees while I played from the tees which I use when I play with the seniors on Friday. I did break 100, but there is still room for improvement.

After golf, I packed up the dehydrator, and the accessories. I will not be dehydrating anything in the near future. Linda took the dehydrator back to the store where she purchased it, and got her money back. I will be purchasing dehydrated fruit and beef jerky, and not making it.
I say "Linda took back the device" because I don't do well psychologically returning items.

While Linda went off to return the dehydrator, I went off to Lee to visit Mom. I took her outside for a walk while she sat in her wheel chair. I did fix her a beverage out of the back of my car, and she proceeded to fall asleep.
She had a wicked cough that sounded like her lungs were a mess. The nursing home staff took an X-Ray because they were concerned also. I don't know the results of the X-Ray yet.
I stopped in to see dad on the way back to Pittsfield. He was sitting in his motorized chair with an Afghan on. My sister happened to be there at the same time. She was on her way to New York State to visit with her grandchild.
My sister and I tried to talk dad into looking into an assisted living setting, but he said that it was financially not an option. My sister and I are concerned about dad.

The book club dinner went well last evening at a friend's home. I bonded with the husband of the host. I ate very well, maybe too well. I really did enjoy the perfectly cooked New york Strip steak, the scallops, eggplant Parmesan, and scalloped potatoes. The strawberry short cake dessert was wonderful too. There goes my diet. I will have to walk an extra mile at the track today.

Politics -- The congressional hearings will be difficult today since the firefighters, who won a reversal of the decision made by the nominee, will testify against her today. The nominee threw out higher test scores of white applicants in favor of lower test scores by blacks.

Sports -- My Red sox are back in action tonight. I should be able to watch a good portion of the game depending on our social calendar.

Social Calendar -- Tonight is Third Thursday in downtown Pittsfield. The event was rated among the top ten free events to participate in by AAA. Normally I would be cooking with my Irish Sister City brothers and sisters, but our President and some workers are in Ireland right now partying with our Irish Sister City friends from Ballina, Ireland. I couldn't run our booth alone.
If the weather is okay, Linda and I will be walking the streets of downtown Pittsfield. Since we normally would be working the event, we very seldom get to see much of it.

Observation -- There was a brief article about the 88 year old female driver who killed the four year old crossing the street at the eastern end of the State a couple of weeks ago. A reporter dug up the facts that this woman has had 5 accidents since 1982, one of which killed her husband. Do you think that some red flags should have come up so that she wouldn't gotten to the point of running over that innocent four year old?
Yes, I know that I will probably be kicking and screaming when my children have to take my driver's license many years from now.
Am I ready to take dear old dad's license away? Yesterday when I visited him, and said that he was sitting in his chair when I arrived, I did observe that he had left the trunk of his car open. Also, his portable walker was set up right outside of the back of the car. This is what I mean when I say dad needs someone to check on him. He doesn't remember that he even does things like this.

Sports Continued -- The British Open is on television right now. A former British Open winner, Tom Watson, shot a 65 today. Good job for a guy over 50 years old! Tiger is even par after 15 holes.

Have to go and get my track walking clothes on. I might have to dodge a few morning rain drops.
Talk to you soon. The Curley Lad

Hello on Wednesday Morning

Dear Friends,

The first round of dehydrating went okay. The jet engines are finally silenced after two days of running the device. The dried fruit didn't come out like the ones in the trail mix bags which we usually purchase at Walmart. The fruit in the Walmart bags can't be real fruit because it is usually soft and sweet. The dehydrated fruit which I produced comes out rather firm to the point where you can break a tooth. I spent enough electricity in two days of running the dehydrator to purchase about five bags of the trail mix at Walmart.
I am not giving up. Drying herbs will be my next experiment.
I did get an e-mail from Linda's sister. Everything that I am experiencing she has already gone through. She said that she purchased a Nesco Dehydrator from an infomercial. Her device is now gather dust in a storage area.

Tuesday went okay. Linda went off to play Mah Jongg after a body maintenance procedure. She has been in a losing streak during the last few session of playing Mah Jongg.
I gave a lawn a trim, and then I went off to the golf course to try out some demo hybrid clubs at the driving range. On the way home I picked up some corn on the cob to go along with the crock pot country style ribs. Supper was wonderful.
My ITAM meeting went well. I will be working in some form at the July 26, 2009 Family Picnic at the Lodge.

Social Calendar -- Linda is off to a book club dinner meeting. I will be going with her. I am not a member of the book club, but I was invited to the dinner. I will be bonding with the husband of the host of the party.
I am playing golf at 7:28 AM. I will be teeing off alone which I really don't mind. I want to work out some of the many kinks in my game. Golf is a personal game at this point in my life.

Politics -- I did watch the Baseball All Star Game after I returned home from my meeting. The President, who threw out the first pitch, said that he never played organized baseball as a child.
The Congressional hearing are going well. The Republicans are really trying to bash the nominee for the Supreme Court. It might come back to bite them!

Observation -- Sometimes I get myself in trouble by what I say. As an example, I walked in to see Mom at the nursing home a couple of days ago at the same time another lady was going in to see her loved one. Since she looked about my age (61 , but soon to be 62), I made the usual comment about: "Our parents have become like our children". She said that she was going in to deal with her husband, and not her parents. Her husband was in need of some rehab. The 70 year old husband was recovering from an embolism. In conversation, she said that her husband also had a bout with stomach cancer which he survived, but the stomach had to be removed. She also said that she had weight loss surgery, and has lost 54 pounds. When will I learn to think before I speak?

Have a great Wednesday.
I know that that I am going to have one too. The Curley Lad

Hello on Tuesday Morning

Dear Friends,

I was having Dehydrator nightmares so I woke up at a very early hour. I never anticipated that the machine would sound like a mini jet engine once it was activated. Most of the fruit which I put in on Monday needs 12 to 16 hours of drying. I have the device sitting on the counter top where the AeroGarden used to be. The next time that I used the dehydrator, I will set it up in the basement.
Don't invite friends over if you are using the machine unless you want to torture your guests!

We had a pleasant evening last night. It was like we were dating once again. We started off with dinner at the newly renovated Patrick's Pub which is about 200 feet from the theater. After a leisurely meal, we headed off to the Colonial Theater to see James Naughton perform. Now you might be thinking who is James Naughton? He spent 14 years in the 70's performing / acting at the Williamstown Theater Festival. He was in the Berkshires so much that he even purchased a house during that time period. He has been on Broadway, and he has acted in movies, and was on several television programs. This night he was performing as a singer.
The crowd was an older one, and at times I thought that I was at a Yiddish Convention. Mr. Naughton performed for an hour and one half without a break. I arrived home in time to watch the Baseball Home Run Derby.

Politics -- The Republicans tried to attack the Supreme Court nominee during the Congressional hearings yesterday. They were "grasping at straws" as the saying goes. I hope that the process ends soon, and she becomes our first Hispanci Supreme Court judge.

Social Calendar -- Linda has her usual Tuesday Mah Jongg from 11:30 AM until 4:30 PM. I am going to try and weave in hitting some golf balls, and visiting Mom at the nursing home in Lee.
I was thinking of slow grilling some Country Style Spare ribs. I thought some corn on the cob from The Partridge Road farm stand would be a good compliment to the ribs. The corn which we had the other night was so sweet, and good that there were no leftovers.
I just remembered that I have a 7 PM Picnic Committee meeting at the ITAM. Oh Darn!

Parents -- Dear Old dad has his orthopedic appointment on Monday which mys sister took him to. The doctor gave him one of those shots with a lubricating agent. I compared to using WD-40 on a squeaky door hinge. The WD-40 is a temporary solution for the problem.

Observation -- I almost gave up recycling cans, and bottles that I have paid a 5 cent deposit for each one. I went off to the grocery store with empty soda and beer cans to get back my deposit. Of course, the day I go, the can machines are out of order. I haul the 150 plus cans back to my car, and try another grocery store. This store only takes soda cans, and not beer cans because this grocery store doesn't sell alcoholic beverages. I have to bring back home a bag of about 60 beer cans, and bottles. What a waste of time and energy.
There is a package store which you can just drop off the recyclables, and tell the recycle guy how many cans and bottles which you have. The grocery store is closer to our home.

Well, I have to check my dehydrated fruits. Certain ones are done, and others need more time in the dehydrating process. The next type of dehydrating will be herbs. You can't mix dehydrating herbs with fruits.
One benefit of the dehydrator is that our house smell very fruity. I did forget to mention what fruits that I did put in the machine. I put in Apples, Pears, Oranges, Bananas, Blueberries, a small Mango, Pineapple, and Grapes. The next time I will do some strawberries, peaches, cherries, cranberries, melons, and plums. A healthy snack food is my goal.

Have a great Tuesday.

Hello on Monday Morning

Dear Friends,

We had a pleasant day on Sunday. I was the first to leave the house which was before Linda woke up. I did my walking at a local track for about an hour. By the time I arrived home Linda was up, and fulling engaged in reading the local newspapers.

After some morning activities, Linda went off to do errands, and I settled in to watch my beloved Red Sox. I did go to bed a very happy person since the Red Sox won their game, and the Yankees lost their contest. This means the Sox are going into the Tuesday night All Star Game with a three game lead in their division.

We had an impromptu cookout last evening. The four guests enjoyed some "beer can" chicken, corn on the cob from a local farm stand, and some tomatoes and mozzarella. A low fat yogurt ice cream with fresh blueberries was the dessert. Our guests needed coffee because the temperatures started to fall off considerably.

Social Calendar -- There is a tournament at our golf course today so I won't be able to play. Linda is going to give up her Monday golf (I think) so that we can attend a cultural event at a local theater. I think that she bought the two tickets by way of a Radio Auction. The nice thing is that we have great seats, and we didn't pay full price.
Now, you might be wondering why I am going? There are no major league baseball games taking place on Monday. I will be missing the All Star players trying to win a home run derby, but I wasn't going to watch the contest anyways.

Politics -- It was kind of quiet in the political world. Our President will be attending Tuesday night's all star game. Congressional hearings for the the candidate for the Supreme Court position begins today.

Linda came home with a new toy for me. I / we now own a Nesco Dehydrator. We bought it for dehydrating the herbs which we grow, and can never keep up with. I am going to dehydrate some fruits too. Eventually I will try and make my own beef jerky.
I actually had a dream that I went to the grocery store and I was personally waited on by a person in the fruit department. I had to go to the supermarket because some of the fruits which I want to dehydrate, we usually don't have in the house like mango's, and kiwi's, etc.
Do you think that it might be easier to just buy the dehydrated items instead of doing so with the new toy? I will keep you informed.

Weather -- We might need a sweater for tonight's cultural event. We will be heading into the forties tonight, and might reach a record for the low temperature.

Observation -- One of our guests last evening brought her 10 year old daughter. I love it when you hear cute little family stories. The ten year old was telling stories of how her father embarrasses her when he drops her off at school or summer camp. The father gives his daughter a kiss goodbye right in front of her classmates and friends. This is totally uncool in the eyes of a 10 year old. She even says that her dad beeps the car horn after the drop off. The daughter wants him to do the drop her off many yards from the front door.
We told the 10 year old to wait until she brings home her first boyfriend. The embarrassment will continue for many years.
The 10 year said that one time, a bunch of her girl friends were watching / playing jeopardy. Her father answered a question correctly, and he started dancing. Another uncool and embarrassing thing her dad did.

Well, I have to read the local newspaper, and get to the track.
Have a great week at work or play.

Hello on Sunday Morning

Dear Friends,
My Saturday started with a 45 minute walk around a nearby track. I decided that since Linda was probably still enjoying a peaceful sleep, no sense in retuning home. I went off to Lee to see how dear old mom was doing. She was still in bed when I arrived, so I asked the nurses' aid to get mom dressed so that I could take her for a walk in he wheel chair, and get some good old fresh air. We did so for about an hour. Yes, she did shed some tears once again. She also said that she feels like she is in a prison. What could I say that would make her feel better. Nothing! If you were in a nursing home for as long as she has been, you would be going stir crazy too.

On a happier note, my Red Sox won their contest by a score of 15 to 9 while the Yankees lost their contest by an almost equal score. This means the Red Sox will be going into today's afternoon game with a two game lead over the Yankees in the Eastern division of the Eastern conference of the American League.

Linda went off with her girlfriends form 2 PM until 9 PM. I savored a short book while she was gone. This book was a really light reading one. It was called "The School of Essential Ingredients".

Social Calendar -- I am going to read the local newspaper first, and head off to the track once again. I am guessing that her girlfriend will call mid morning, and they plan on some adventure for the day. Linda is really taking my rule to heart that "Separation is good". I have a 1:30 PM Red Sox game to keep me entertained.

The thunderstorms arrived a little after 7 PM last night. If you had lawn tickets for Tanglewood, you got wet, and you were cold. Tanglewood lost money last night. Since the major industries have left Berkshire County, the area really depends on tourism dollars.
The rains did reach Fenway in the top of ninth inning, but the game was pretty much over by then.
A second and final front rolled through the Berkshires around midnight.
Today is supposed to be a very pleasant day in the Berkshires.

Politics -- It was kind of quiet on Saturday. Sarah Pallin has two indictments against her. President Obama wants the rich to pay for Universal Health Care. As a diehard Democrat, I don't think that this should happen. We probably could have paid for a health care plan if we weren't spending so much money fighting wars with no end.

Observation -- I was thinking about my father, and his ability to drive his car. Since his legs are so bad when he walks, and one leg needs to be looked at by an orthopedics person (appointment on Monday at 10:45 AM), how can he still drive a car? I don't have an answer to that question.
Maybe certain seniors, who have such physical problems, should have a big sign in their window of their cars, or on the car itself. These cars would be like the one from those driving schools which are clearly marked: "Student Drivers". The sign could say: "Senior driver -- Keep a distance of 100 feet between yourself and this car". It sounds cruel, but it is a fact of life. The safety of the public is of utmost concern.
They did charge that 88 year old woman who killed a 4 year old who was crossing (walking) the street with her scooter a couple of weeks ago at the eastern end of the State.

Have a great Sunday.
Enjoy the day no matter what the weather turns out to be.

Hello on Saturday Morning

Dear Friends,

We went in opposite directions on Friday. I went off to visit with my parents in Lee while Linda went to a matinee play at the Barrington Stage with a girlfriend. I didn't get all the details because I was engrossed with the Red Sox game, which was a "nail bitter", when she came home near 10 PM.
Her adventure didn't end with the end of the play which went from 2 PM until 5 PM. Linda and her friend hooked up with another girlfriend to do supper, and some recreational shopping. I was invited to join them for supper, but I was already in the middle of eating leftovers. Oh Joy!

I did finish savoring another book. Linda has been bringing back books from the dollar store since I have read most of the top 10 books. The dollar store books are hit or miss.

Sports -- My Red Sox are now alone in first place by 1 game since the Yankees lost their west coast game.

Politics -- Governor Sanford was not only chasing an Argentinian woman, but he was looking in to purchasing real estate in Latin America. His days are numbered as Governor.
In Italy, the skirt chaser Burlesconi, is still in office, and he is still accepted by a good number of Italians.
I guess some countries believe it is okay for their leaders to have mistresses. Power and money once again rule!

Observation -- I don't like some of the proposals to pay for health care. The one where the President would like to do an extra tax for those making over $200,000 doesn't seem fair. You shouldn't be penalized if you work hard. Do I sound like a Republican?
Maybe a better approached would be to stop paying people for not working. Once you receive a monthly check for sitting on your butt, it very difficult to go out and seek a job. I am not talking about the people who lost their job, and who are on unemployment because those unemployment checks don't last for ever.
Healthy people should be working even if the job seems menial (unless you are retired).
One of my teacher friends (elementary physical education teacher) has been working since the day he retired. He works at a local grocery store. He is one the people who go out into the parking lot during rain, sleet, and snow, to retrieve the shopping carts. He seems to be happy doing this job. I think that he is working for the social security benefits even though his benefits will be reduced by 2/3 since he has a teacher pension plan. Thank you President Reagan for signing that law back in 1985!

Social Calendar -- Since Linda and I communicated for less than five minutes on Friday, I don't know what is on our social calendar for today.

Weather -- We never reached 80 degrees in the Berkshires on Friday. Today we will be experiencing rain during the afternoon into the evening. We are still into a pattern of high's in the low 70's, and lows in the 50's. The good thing is that the air conditioners have been needed, and I haven't had to water the flowers except for the two hanging pots on either side of the garage which the eaves prevent the rain from reaching.
I did forget to mention that I dropped one of those hanging baskets a couple of weeks ago. I dropped and cracked one when I was trying to rotate the pot. Duck tap to the rescue. The flowers are growing so well that you can't see the Grey duck tape on the white flower pot.

I feel bad for the people who have purchased tickets to one of our local venues called Tanglewood. This is the summer home for the Boston Sympathy Orchestra located in Lenox (six miles south of Pittsfield). The nights have been cool, and the evening rains have really put a damper on people who picnic on the lawn outside of the music shed.

Well, I have to grab another cup of coffee. I have had only two since my gall bladder was removed. I have been drinking tea instead of coffee. As of this moment, I seemed to be doing okay with the coffee and fat free half and half.
Have a great weekend wherever you are located.

Hello on Friday Morning

Dear Friends,

It is a balmy 48 degrees as I begin this e-mail, but the good news is that it will be sunny and reach into the lower 80's today. We have hit 80 degrees only once in over 30 days. We would normally be enjoying the afternoons and evenings in the screened in room on the deck, but it has been too cool to do so. Linda tried to finish reading a book there yesterday afternoon, but she gave up, and came into the warmth of the house.

My Red Sox couldn't keep pace with the Yankees. They are now tied for first place in their division. All my friends who are Yankee fans will be saying: "I told you so!"

I won't be getting dressed for golf with the seniors since the course is closed because there is a golf tournament booked in for Friday. My friends didn't want to try another golf course.

Social Calendar -- It might be a "dealing with my parents" day for me. The wound clinic at Berkshire Medical Center said that the amputated leg is ready to have a prosthesis. Dad and his bum leg weren't doing well on Thursday. At times I wish that he was in the nursing home getting help and rehab. Dad was hurting so much yesterday that he didn't feel that he could go with my mom in the Cabulance with my wheel chair bound mother. My sister dealt with Mom at the wound clinic.

Linda will be trying to get half price tickets for a play. If she is able to secure two tickets, her and girlfriend will be attending the play. I have my faltering Red Sox to keep me entertained.

Politics -- Congress is dealing with a Universal Health proposal. How to pay for it is a big issue.

Observation -- If we had an influx of some serious cash, there are so many things around the home it could be used for. Our kitchen cabinets are nearing replacement. I wish I was handy enough to install new ones. We want new cabinets and a new counter top. We would also like to replace the counter tops of the vanities, and the sinks in several bathrooms. Actually, I don't have the tools necessary to do such projects. I am good at cutting the lawn, and weed whacking. I could work a grill okay too.

Have to read the local newspaper, and get dressed for the days' activities.
Have a great weekend.

Hello on Thursday Morning

Dear Friends,

Wednesday was a long day for my sister and I. I headed to Lee before my sister, and made my ailing dad breakfast. I eventually made lunch for the both of them. Mom enjoyed sitting at her own kitchen table.
Marie coordinated getting a Cabulance to bring mom from the nursing home to the family home in Lee. Once Mom was home, we anticipated that she would not want to go back to the nursing home. She said so many time during here 4.5 hour visit.
During the visit, I think that my mother realized that it took two people to take care of her. My mother saw my sister and I as we struggled to get her from the wheel chair to the comode, and back into the wheel chair. My mother noticed that my sister was sweating profusely trying to help her do so (I am not a person who perspires too much). Also my sister knows how to lift people from her experience as an X-Ray Tech and Ultrasound technician. The Cabulance took mom back to the nursing home around 4:30 PM.
I went directly home totally exhausted.
My sister went to the nursing home to make sure that my mom got back okay, and was all settled in. She was more exhausted than I was.
I had just about energy to make it through the Red Sox game.

The Red Sox and Yankees kept pace with one another once again.

Sports -- It appears that the death of the football player was a murder suicide. The 20 year old mistress of the 36 year old football player appears to have shot the football player multiple times before putting a bullet in her own brain.
Power and money allows these people once again to have extramarital affairs. From what I observe, trying to please more than one woman is almost impossible. I also notice that most of these men who stray, go after much younger women.

Politics -- Our President is getting ready for another Super Powers conference in Italy. I hope everything goes well. The Vice-President spoke (or will speak) at a school in New York State. I hope that he doesn't say things which the President has to correct or clarify.

Observation -- Marriage is a two way street, but it has its idiosyncrasies. Besides giving birth, and raising a family, women are once again called upon to make their men happy even as they age. Not all women understand this.
I would really like to know why these men (I realize women stray too). who have had affairs, did so. What was going on in their relationships that made these men (or women) break those "vows of marriage"?

Social Calendar -- I don't know what is on our calendar today. I saw Linda for 10 minutes when I got home from Lee yesterday since she was heading off to supper with some girlfriends, and a session of Mah Jongg . When she came home, I was watching the last couple innings of the nail biting Red Sox game. Whoa! Maybe that is it! When we were first married, we had only one television, and we had to share what we watched on television. Maybe I should alter my own Curleyism that "Separation is Good". Not!

It rained in Pittsfield on Wednesday afternoon, but it didn't rain in Lee (12 miles away).

Have a great Thursday.

Hello on Wednesday Morning

Dear Friends,
The big news in our local newspaper is that the State is closing down the boat ramp at Laurel Lake in Lee which is right across from my mom's nursing home. They found Zebra mussels. My contention is that if they found zebra mussels in this small lake (you can see from one end to the other), then mussels are most likely in every lake in Massachusetts which allow boating. This is the same lake that I grew up swimming in as well as doing my ice-fishing thing especially this past winter.

Speaking of Mom, my sister decided to take my for a visit in her own home today. I think that once we get her in her home, she won't want to go back to the nursing home. I will be heading to Lee to help out with this adventure in a few short hours.
My sister took dad to the emergency room yesterday. One of his legs was bothering him. He was sent home with pain meds, and my sister is trying to get him booked in to see an orthopedic doctor. He might need a little day surgery.
Our parents have become our children! Oh Joy!

Our Tuesday went as planned except that I didn't swing a golf club. I decided to started a form of exercise by walking around a nearby track. I have to have some form of exercise woven into my new life style.
The crock pot pot roast was very good last night. I ate a healthy portion, and didn't go back for seconds. I was amazed that the fat from the marbled meat didn't bother me.

I did squeeze in a Prayer Service for the deceased father of one of our UNICO members last night at 6 PM. The gentleman was the same age as my father, 85 years old.
Linda had fun at her Mah Jongg session on Tuesday. She has another session this evening with a different group of players at a friend's house. I have my Red Sox to keep me entertained.

The Red Sox and the Yankees kept pace with on another by winning their respective contests.

What will the media have to talk about since the Michael Jackson saga has come to an end? I actually shouldn't say that it has ended because now the media will have his will and the custody of his children to deal with.

I received my second cell phone to replace my "lost" one. I love it, and Linda wishes she had one like it. It has more features than my original cellphone, and Linda likes the color of it too.

We picked up more rain yesterday and last evening. The slugs and mosquitoes are thriving in the Berkshires.

Politics -- Health Care is the big topic in Washington. Could universal health care be on the horizon? No, I don't want the Canadian version. There are some countries where it does work. We are smart enough to work out the details. Yes, I know some of you are thinking that the government managing health care isn't going to work. Let's not say "No" until we see what a proposal looks like.

Have to finish the local newspaper, and head to Lee.

Hello on Tuesday Morning

Dear Friends,

Our Monday went as planned.
After several hours of yard work, I took a nap, started a new book, and headed off to Scholarship night at the ITAM Lodge.
Linda had a peaceful morning while I was doing my thing. She did have to deal with my clothes in the washing machine. I am notorious for starting the washing machine, and then walking away. I must admit that when Linda does my clothes, they pretty much come out wrinkle free. Of course, I often cause her to do some extra washing because I often dribble food and beverages over many parts of my clothing.
As an example, I put on a new shirt just before we attended the afternoon cookout on Sunday. I did quite well making it through appetizers, and the main meal without spilling any food or beverages on my shirt or slacks. When it came to dessert, I wasn't so lucky. I spilled a spoonful of ice cream on my brand new shirt. Linda is the Queen of stain removal, and she returned my shirt so that it looked like it was brand new.

Linda did play golf with her girlfriends on Monday as scheduled while I was helping with the scholarship awards night. I was home by 8:30 PM.

I didn't go to bed a happy man because my Red Sox lost their game. Luckily , the Yankees lost their game too.

Social Calendar -- Linda has her usual Tuesday Mah Jongg session from 11:30 AM until 4 PM. I might head off to the driving range at my golf course, and try and straighten out some of my ball striking problems.
Since the weather forecast has some scattered thundershowers predicted for most of the day and evening, I decided to prepare a crock pot meal for supper. I just got through preparing a pot roast with all the fixings. It will be fork tender by supper time.

Politics -- Sarah Pallin resigning has angered some of her Republican Colleagues.
A Bronx congressman has made some harsh comments about Michael Jackson being a pervert, and the fact that the media is spending too much time and energy on Michael Jackson.
President Obama is trying to keep the lines of dialogue going with the Russian leaders.
Governor Sanford's is still trying to run the affairs of his state even though there is quite a bit of sentiment for him to resign.
Doesn't it sound like business as usual?

Observation -- With all the rain which we have had in the Northeast, the mosquitoes have emerged with a vengeance. They even follow you when you go from the yard into the house. Yesterday, I tried to trim some branches of a tree which scrapes against the house when the wind blows. I think I gave up a pint of blood to the mosquitoes.
I also don't like putting on bug spray on my exposed body parts or on articles of clothing.
Good thing that we have a screened in room on the deck so that we can enjoy the evenings without being attacked by those flying blood suckers.

Have a great Tuesday.

Hello on Monday Morning

Dear Friends,

It is 46 degrees as I start this e-mail. If we were camping out, there would be a lot of snuggling taking place.

Our Sunday went as planned. Linda woke up as I finished skimming the local newspaper, and the Boston Globe. I decided to let her read the newspaper so I went off to see dear old mom in the nursing home.
I wheeled Mom outside, and we both got a chance to enjoy the sunshine. I remembered that I never took the cooler out of my car from the party on the previous day. Mom and I shared a couple of bottles of Mike's Hard Lemonade, and this was at 10:30 AM.
Around 11 AM, I went the the family home in Lee to check on Dad, and to give the postage size lawn a trim.

I came home and gave my lawn a trim too. I then settled down to watch the Red Sox win, and also to watch Tiger Woods win another golf tournament.
Linda went off to do errands while I was enjoying the Red Sox game.

At 4:30 PM we walked about 50 paces to my neighbor's deck to begin another cycle of fun and merriment. After munching on a healthy vegetable dip, and chicken wrapped bacon appetizers, our male host grilled steak on skewers. Along with the red meat, our host prepared a potato and vegetable combination, and a green salad. The matriarch of the household made a wonderful sugar laden dessert topped off with ice cream. There goes all my plans of eating healthy foods, and losing weight.

Social Calendar -- Linda has her 3:30 PM golf today. I have a 7 PM UNICO Scholarship Reception at the ITAM. Both the ITAM and UNICO will be awarding scholarship at the event. UNICO is preparing the cheese and crackers, and finger sandwiches. Some of us scholarship committee members will be serving the food, and involved with cleanup.
Hopefully, the awards night won't last too long so I will get a chance to watch the last half of the Red Sox game which starts at 7:10 PM.

I didn't apply for a chance to secure a ticket to the Staple Center for the Michael Jackson Memorial event in California. Everyone I know said that they were tired hearing about all the Michael Jackson stuff.

Observation -- I have been reading and listening to all the details of the latest big name person who was shot and killed at only 36 years of age. Steve McNair, a former NFL footbal player, was riddled with gun shot wounds, and the woman he was with had one gun shot wound to the head. It sounds like a murder suicide. The person who found the bodies just happened to be the ex-boyfriend of the deceased woman. Of course, McNair was married at the time of the shooting. Money and power bring more than fame and fortune!

Well, have a great week at work or play.

Hello on Sunday Morning

Dear Friends,

Hope that your Fourth of July went as well as the Curley's did.
After marching in the Pittsfield Parade, which ended around noon, I headed home to cut up vegetables for a vegetable dip.
Linda had a calm and relaxing morning since I left the house at 7:30 AM.

We loaded up the car with the vegetable dip, the lemon lust dessert, and a cooler of beverages. The lemon lust dessert was a big hit. It was gone in a minute and one half.
The usual meat items of hot dogs, hamburgs, and boneless breast of chicken were grilled to perfection. I resisted eating the hot dogs and hamburgs, and consumed only chicken. We had several types of salads, but I once again resisted eating a wonderful looking potato salad, and a macaroni salad. I consumed a green salad that had healthy items in it.
My beverage of choice for the day was red wine. I had felt nauseous since I had that one cup of coffee at the Italian American Club before we headed out to the parade. The red wine made that ill feeling go away.
Our hosts have an in ground swimming pool, but only three adults, and two children ventured into the water. The swimming pool water was what I classified as refreshing. Every time the two children exited the pool, they looked like they were suffering from hypothermia.

We stayed for supper, and the fireworks. The fireworks were spectacular. Even though they are illegal in Massachusetts, they were going off everywhere in the neighborhood which we were in. I am talking about the type of fireworks which you would see a professionally orchestrated show.

The weather for the day was kind of strange. During the day , we spent most of the time putting on and taking off our sweatshirts. At night it was a different story. It got so cold that I had to go to my car and get a wool blanket. Linda and I sat side by side in our respective chairs and fought over keeping ourselves covered with the wool blanket. Yes I did have all kinds of jackets to put on, but I needed something to cover my legs since it was so cold. Our guests even started a bond fire to keep away the mosquitoes, and to keep us warm. The Curley departed at 9:30 PM. The party was still going on as we left the fun and merriment.

We are booked in for another cookout today. Our next door neighbor invited us for this gathering. I just got through watching the weather channel, it looks like we might have our first day of no rain in the forecast with a high in the low 70's. The upcoming week looks like we have a chance of a thunderstorm every single day.

While at the cookout, I watched and listened to the Red Sox game. The Sox lost another one while the Yankees won their game in extra innings. I believe the Sox have a one game lead in their division. I am starting to get bad vibes about the status of my Red Sox.

Observation -- Like I said yesterday, fireworks should be made legal in Massachusetts. They were going off in every neighborhood in Pittsfield, and in Massachusetts in generaql. Yes, we will read about several accidents which occurred over the holidays, but it is the same situation every single year. What is the Fourth of July without fireworks?

Politics -- I see that my Sarah Pallin comments struck a few chords in some of my readers. I heard yesterday, from one of my very conservative UNICO brothers while at the parade, that Sarah resigned to go after a senate seat in Alaska. She would partake of the inside political scene for several years, and then make a run for President in 2016, and not 2012.
Oh Joy, once again!

Have a great Sunday.
I have to get to the Sunday newspapers before the Queen wakes up. Is this considered a quiet activity?

Hello on the Fourth of July

Dear Friends,

Our Friday went as planned.

My golf was awful. Too many mishits. I contributed only once out of 18 holes. My lack of play is a cause of most of my problems.

In a couple of hours, I will be off to the Pittsfield Fourth of July Parade. Of course you have to arrive early, and wait to be lined up for our particular slot in the parade. The Parade kicks off at 10 AM. I will be marching with my UNICO Brothers and Sisters.

After the parade, I am going to cut up vegetables for a vegetable dip. Linda made dessert last night as I watched the Red Sox lose. The Yankees won their afternoon game, and now they are only two games behind the Red Sox.

The Fourth of July Party, which we were invited to, starts around 1:30 PM today.

I received an e-mail from our friends who are on a couple week trip to Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Bay of Fundy, etc. They were having a great time in the Canadian Provinces.

I haven't visited Mom since Wednesday. Guilt is mounting!

Politics -- Sarah Pallin is resigning as Governor of Alaska. Most speculation is that she is gearing up for a 2012 run for President. She has enough to do as a Mom even if she chooses not to run for President.

Have to grab some breakfast, and select my marching clothes --> Tan shorts, light blue UNICO shirts, and sneakers.
They do have coffee, juice and doughnuts for us marchers at the Italian American Club at 7:30 AM, but I think a doughnut will cause some serious indigestion in the Curley Lad.

Observation -- Fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts, but you can see them and hear them every night in our neighborhood. They might as well make possession of fireworks legal even if people lose various parts of their body every year. It is a tradition!

Hello on Friday Morning

Dear Friends,

Our Thursday went as planned.
While I was getting the Neon inspected, Linda was off to her Pittsfield Retiree once a month breakfast. The Neon passed inspection quite easily. The mechanic had to make some adjustments to make the auto emissions part render a "Pass" result.

Lind and I bonded from about 10 AM until our evening adventure. I did finish savoring another book, and squeezed in a nap.

My new cell phone arrived, and I hate it. I called up the 800 number and ordered one more comparable to the one that I "lost". The phone was small, and it had less features than my last cell phone. I talked to a customer representative, and they are sending me a new cell phone better than the previous one.
You might be wondering how I could not like a brand new phone. Linda went on line and read me some ratings for the cell phone. The one that stuck in my mind was that the cell phone was "adequate if you were a fifth grader.". I may some times act like a fifth grader, but this phone is awful. The customer representative said that I can use this cell phone until the new one arrives. Oh Joy!

The Shakespearean cocktail party went very well. There was much food, wine, and merriment. Around 8 PM , they started flicking the lights for everyone to go in the theater and see a production of "Othello." My male friend and I went to my car, and went to his house in West Stockbridge. We watched the "Dirty Dozen" for the hundredth time. I kept on watching the clock, and waiting for the arrival of our wives. They never arrived back until after 11:30 PM (the play started at 8 PM). The play was so long and tiresome that our wives said that it was good that we chose to skip the play. Many of the patrons left the play at "Half Time", I mean intermission. The wives said that we would have been bobbing and weaving since the play was so long. Unless we get free tickets, you won't see me at another Shakespearean play.

I am just about ready to load up my car with my golf clubs and gear. It is Friday golf with my senior buddies. The last time I played with them was over three weeks ago. I think that today is that pizza party which keeps on getting postponed.

The Red Sox had a travel day, but the Yankees lost their game. Their $180 million dollar pitcher couldn't get the job done.

Politics -- Nothing exciting happening on the national or the State level.
At the local level, one of our city councilors got arrested for domestic assault. He assaulted his live in girlfriend who likes to do a little cocaine. It appears that he was not liking her cocaine habit. She hit him, and then he grabbed her. Another relationship made in heaven.

Observation -- As I was getting the 1996 Neon inspected, I started thinking about cars. During our almost 38 years of marriage, we have owned only two new cars. We had purchased a Chevy Chevette, and the Neon. Every other car we purchased has been used. Even my father has purchased more new cars than we have. We very seldom get a chance to enjoy that new car smell unless we ride with somebody who purchases a new car.
Now that we are retired that Chevette and Neon might end up being the only new cars that we have ever purchased. We did sell the Chevette to a guy, but he died of cancer a few years after he bought it from us. I don't think that the car was jinxed.

Social Calendar -- Linda is going to make a grocery run while I am playing golf. We are bringing a vegetable dip and a dessert to an afternoon party on the Fourth of July. I will be slicing up the vegetables after golf today. It might be after I take a nap.

I checked the Parade Booklet, and our UNICO Balloon is the second one in the Parade. I think that I will be able to march in the Parade, and get home to watch the rest of it on public access television.

My Red Sox are in action at home tonight. I hope that the weather allows them to get the game in.

Have to get some healthy breakfast, and head off to the links.

Hello on Thursday Morning

Dear Friends,

A couple claps of thunder, and some falling rain was all it took to wake me up this morning. It is another day where I don't have to be concerned about watering the flowers in the front, and in the back of the house.

Mom's ride went off at the scheduled time on Wednesday morning except we went in my Subara Legacy Wagon. We left my father at home so it was my Mom, my sister, and me. My mother didn't really enjoy the ride as much as my sister thought that she would.
We didn't drive by the family home because we thought that it might upset her. Somehow, we have to get mom to accept that she only has one leg, but life still goes on. Yes, it will not be easy for a 92 year old person with one leg, but a person has to make the best of a not so good situation.

Last night, Linda and I went in different directions. She was a substitute for a Mah Jongg session at a friend's house. She is not a regular member of this group.
I went off to my UNICO Board Meeting, and did some socializing after the meeting since I haven't seen most of my friends in several weeks.

My Red Sox redeemed themselves with a come from behind win. Things looked grim as the Sox got up to bat in the top of the ninth inning behind by a score of 5 to 1. To tie up the game, and eventually win the game in extra innings was truly amazing. The Yankees kept pace by winning their game.

I am taking Linda's 1996 Neon for a yearly inspection today at 8:30 AM. Linda doesn't know this yet.

Yes, we are socially engaged this evening. Shakespeare & Company has their gala opening this evening. Since our friend is a donor, she is allowed to bring four people to a cocktail party, and then to a Shakespearean Play. My injured golfing buddy hasn't decided whether he wants to attend or not. I might attend the party, and leave after the cocktail party, and visit with my friend if he chooses not to go.
I am not sure if I could make it through a Shakespearean Play.

Observation -- Linda came home with a bunch of the Cape Cod Brochures, which she picked up on her recent girls' weekend. She knows that I love to read the brochures. One of the brochures was called "Pridepages". As read this Cape Cod brochure, I soon realized that it was designed for "Gays". All the places who advertised in this brochure are "Gay friendly." For any of my readers who might not know, Provincetown on Cape Cod is a haven for the gay community. As you walk the streets of Provincetown, the gays and lesbians openly flaunt the fact that they are gay. The stores and restaurants cater to the gays. There are some shops and taverns which do cater to us straight people. Provincetown is a great place to visit if you are doing the whole Cape Cod experience.
I did ask Linda if she was trying to send me a message since this brochure was among the rest of the usual Cape Cod brochures. She said "No", and that she picked up the brochure because it was labeled "Cape Cod". Yeah Right!

Well, I have to read the local newspaper, and get dressed for the start of today's adventures.
I am really going to try and be extremely quiet because it does appear that this dark and gloomy start to this day is great for sleeping. Of course, I will have to open the garage door which can wake anyone from a deep sleep.

Have a great Thursday.

Hello on Wednesday Morning

Dear Friends,

I didn't go to bed a happy man on Tuesday because my Red Sox squandered a nine run lead, and lost the rain delayed game by a score of 11 to 10. The Yankees inched closer to the division leading Sox by winning their game. It was ugly to see the Sox lose.
The Sox play at 1:30 PM today. This does interfere with my afternoon nap.

Linda and I didn't do much bonding on Tuesday. I forgot that she had her usual Tuesday Mah Jongg session as well as the evening BONCO session with her girlfriends.

I am the busy one today. I am going to go to Lee for moral support for Mom's first drive (as a passenger) in their family car since December 25, 2008 which is when dad first took her to the hospital. My sister will be driving the car.
I will be attending a UNICO board meeting at 6 PM, but I will not be running it since I am now officially the "Past President."

Observation -- Am I the only one who is tired of the news being dominated by Michael Jackson?
How about the four soldiers who were killed on Monday just before the Americans turned over control (Tuesday) to the Iraqi's hoping that they can run their own country?
How come Billy Mays can have an autopsy, and have funeral arrangements made within a few days of his death?
Reverend Al Sharpton say that Michael Jackson "wasn't a freak, but he was really a genius?" I am not convinced by his words of wisdom.
If they spend many more days delving into Michael Jackson's life, children, and family in general, Al Sharpton might be changing his choice of words.

Politics -- How about the disgraced Governor saying that he had affairs with several women, and not just the one from Argentina? Maybe politicians like him should have a harem!
Finally, the courts in Minnesota have declared Al Francken the winner of the political race. The political wrangling has been going on for 8 months. Maybe a comedian will be a good thing for the people of Minnesota. The late night comedians have an unending source of material for their shows from the extracurricular activities which our politicians have been engaged in.

There was another accident yesterday in Massachusetts involving two elderly drivers. A new law aimed at senior citizens is on the horizon.

After I gave the lawn a trim yesterday, I was all set to load up the car with the grass clippings, and take them to our resource recovery plant when a neighbor said that he would take the clippings. He uses the clippings in his vegetable garden to keep down the weeds, and keep his plants warm.

Well, I have to do some quiet chores before heading off to the nursing home.

Yesterday, people must of known that Linda was home. The telephone started ringing the minute that she woke up.

Have a great Wednesday.
